The PGA tour has its made for TV brouhaha events, such as The Skins Game (a.k.a. the Fred Couples ATM), Battle of Bighorn, etc., that grace our large screen TVs at the end of the PGA tour season. A couple of us GCAers partook in what may become an annual silly season event at Lawsonia Links this afternoon. Mike McGuire, Mike Kennedy, Doug Kruep, and I played in the Fall Big Hole 4 man scramble today. Yes, you read it right, GCAers in a BIG CUP SCRAMBLE (cluster divots and all for Kavanaugh). The catch was that the cups were placed in the most ridiculous spots that were remotely puttable with a big cup. This coupled with the greens running their smoothest and quickest I have experienced at Lawsonia and a gusty 1-2 club wind led to a very entertaining afternoon. The picture below shows the the pin location on #6 from #7 tee. Those familiar with the course will recognize the absurdity of this pin placement.
If the putt shown above gets to the hole and misses its final resting place will be some 20+ yards off the green down the very steep false front shown here hill. Every hole was cut on either the edges of an extreme internal undulation or on the steepest possible slope near the fringe. 20-foot comebackers were fairly common.
Despite the "absurdity" of the event (or more likely due to it), the event was a blast, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a fun experience at Lawsonia during a beautiful time of year when the course is often playing at its best.
Cheers,
Brad
