Lipstick on a pig...White meat or moss peat?
« on: September 04, 2007, 10:35:52 AM »
I kinda like but am a bit scared of the work done at TPC of Boston.  After getting use to the trend of Fazio and Jones wrecking the look of great courses we get a FNS architect dressing up a piece of crap.  We now have leading pundits declaring that theater is good for architecture.  Has this ever happened before and we didn't know it because the "look" wasn't there?  What are other examples of lipstick on a pig?

Is it fair to simply call it lipstick on a pig when there were substantive changes like the 4th?
Big drivers and hot balls are the product of golf course design that rewards the hit one far then hit one high strategy.  Shinny showed everyone how to take care of this whole technology dilemma. - Pat Brockwell, 6/24/04

I think it is perfecly fair given there are often substantive changes in the length of holes during a "renovation".   I am not knocking the work done by Faxon/Hanse...I am curious if this is really a new trend.

I am not sure but I beileve that Tom Weiskopf may have made a par 4 at Olympic Lake into a signature short 4 during his work there.  That would not be an example of lipstick on a pig.

Chocolate drops with fescue.  When did these become a classical feature worthy of celebration?
