Chris,

I don't like your tone. Sure, one weed seems like nothing but then its another weed and another weed and another weed and soon the Communists are in power.

This is all too much for me. I need to go and pummel a small woodland creature.

A natural response, as you are always getting beat by the Heather. ;D

There's no need to bring this up. You try dating a woman who's a 10  and see how well you do!

She kicked my butt at Eastward Ho, Black Rock and Acoaxet as well your place.

Read any good books lately?

Yes, thank you, but I've only gotten to 5 on my way To The Nines.

What are you about 4 over at this point?

Have the words "green expansions" come up around your place recently?

Not yet. I was hoping that Heather and her coterie of superintendents would fix all that stuff when they last visited, but alas, it wasn't to be.

You have a triplex I can borrow? I'll start the process with a little night mowing.

Tony:

Since you asked (earlier), I would not have built the set of fairway bunkers at the corner of the pond which make the hole into a reverse "Z" shape; it forces the short hitter way out to the right leaving them with all carry over the bunkers for their third.  I would have let the fairway skirt the corner of the pond pretty closely so that the player who drove to the right off the tee would be rewarded by getting to play left on the second shot without carrying the pond.

And I don't like rectangular tees for precisely the reason you can see in your photo ... you've got a rectangle in the foreground and a bunch of sinewy fairway edges beyond, and they clash.

Tom,

Interesting take on the tees. I love rectangle tees because they sharply define the starting point of the hole. For instance, I love the way Raynor's hard rectangular tees contrast to the wild and ungeometric holes at Fishers Island. I love the way they contrast the ungeometric shorline. It is also the one place where the architect can determine the player's position. In find your freeform (is that a good description?) tees don't fit the course. I think I'm thinking specifically of the first par-5 at Pacific, but this is personal taste and really doesn't affect playability. I don't judge golf courses on tee shapes.

As far as Silva's fifth, what I like about the bunkers on the inside of the hole is I think it sets up this par-5 to be the most difficult on the golf course for those who lack length and I am by no means a long hitter. It is the one 5 where the shorter hitter has to work the hardest. In the context of the three other par 5s, I think the strategy fits nicely. But I understand your point.

Turns out the pond is completely natural. Talked with someone involved with construction who said the shape is exactly they way it was when construction began. Nobody touched nothing. Now if that isn't minimalism, then what is?
