Tom,
Interesting take on the tees. I love rectangle tees because they sharply define the starting point of the hole. For instance, I love the way Raynor's hard rectangular tees contrast to the wild and ungeometric holes at Fishers Island. I love the way they contrast the ungeometric shorline. It is also the one place where the architect can determine the player's position. In find your freeform (is that a good description?) tees don't fit the course. I think I'm thinking specifically of the first par-5 at Pacific, but this is personal taste and really doesn't affect playability. I don't judge golf courses on tee shapes.
As far as Silva's fifth, what I like about the bunkers on the inside of the hole is I think it sets up this par-5 to be the most difficult on the golf course for those who lack length and I am by no means a long hitter. It is the one 5 where the shorter hitter has to work the hardest. In the context of the three other par 5s, I think the strategy fits nicely. But I understand your point.
