1927 book:Golf Holes They Talk About????
« on: August 23, 2002, 06:45:27 AM »
Has anyone seen this book:

GOLF HOLES THEY TALK ABOUT. by Frank Hopkins.Privately printed, 1927, lim ed

It has appeared in a recent used golf book catalog. I've seen it listed in the Donovan/Murdoch guide to books, but do now know the content. It's $795...sounds interesting.

Sounds like a good one for Sleeping Bear to reprint.
BTW- I just got a Right handed Ben Sayers Redan Iron this summer. It is a mid-iron so it would be about right for that hole.

geoff shackelford-

this book is a series of sketches/cartoons of famous eastern U.S. golf holes.  added into each sketch are drawings of famous anecdotes or golfers who've played the hole.   they originally appeared in the new york world-telegram in 1927.  the book is not about golf architecture.

Geoff,
My friend Ron Muszalski has a copy of the book. The next time you are out at Pebble Beach stop by Cambridge Golf Antiuqities where he works and say hi. Ron has an amazing golf library, not on par with Alastair Johnston, but for a working stiff there is not a better library in the world. Give Ron a call at 831 648-8937 and he would be happy to tell you about the book. You've talked to Ron before when we were buying your books. Hope this helps.

The book is very cool and is sort of formatted like the old Ripley's believe it or not cartoons. Its a little pricey as you noted but is pretty rare and doesn't come up at auction or in catalogues very often.

John,
I'm glad you enjoyed talking to Ron. He is one of the great guys in the world. He can talk your ear off, but I am proud to call him my friend.
