POOR MAN'S CYPRESS POINT

Last weekend I drove down the coast of California on Highway 1 and upon driving through the town of San Simeon, where Hearst Castle is located, I discovered a very neat little 9 hole par 3 course.  Other then the fact that it had flag sticks and tee mats, it could hardly be classified as a golf course, however it made for a very enjoyable round of golf.  The holes range in distance from 50 to 98 yards, and the “greens” are simply an irrigated circular area, that effectively creates a contrast from the rest of the property which consists of un-irrigated native grasses.  The property is very close proximity to the ocean and possesses a lot of beautiful cypress trees.  Only a wedge or two are necessary to play the course, I wouldn’t recommend using a putter.  Overall a very enjoyable golf experience on a rather atypical golf course that only takes 45 minutes to play.  Here are a few photos I took:

A very poor man ;). Looks cool though if they could fix it up. The greens look like they stimp at 6 inches.

Thanks for sharing the pics.  It looks like a fascinating place.  I used to think I could enjoy most any course.  Maybe I should rethink that.

Agreed, a very poor man indeed.

So whats the play on this hole??  A quarter swing low 3 iron that hopefully runs on the green?   ;D

Looks to me you'd have to hook that quarter swing low 3 iron! Doesnt look like an easy par to me!

What did they charge (just for a laugh)?  The over/under is $6.

No problem for the leftys.  They get the usual 2nd class treatment and must build thier stance in the dirt...   ;D

Either that or maybe its a reversable course, so that would suit them...

Go ahead and start the "San Simeon Pines in Reverse" thread.  ;)

Being a lefty and playing the course in reverse would make for some interesting hole locations on the mat!

thanks for posting.  We used to talk about "emergency holes" in the CA group I used to play with.  This would seem to qualify.
 
I'm dying to know the "Golf Course Rules" posted on the 1st tee  :D

That's teriffic.

And Doak and C&C think they're "minimalists".   They ain't seen nuthin'!

Who's the architect??   One would think you'd need cuyones of steel to display your design "work" to the owner.  ;D

       You are the man.  I am thinking that is a pretty stress free round of golf, but full of fun.  Beautiful photos too.
