Mark Parsinen has posted the first, of what are likely to be several, video "progress reports" on his project at Castle Stuart on youtube.com.

If nothing else, this looks like a great and (I would guess) inexpensive way to promote/create buzz for a new course.

There are a few wide shots in this video in which the site looks a lot like Chambers Bay minus some of the elevation.  The way the course sits on the Firth of Moray looks very similar to Puget Sound.

I had a tour of the Castle Stuart site about a month ago. There is PLENTY of elevation there, as the clubhouse/hotel/1st tee/18th green/etc. will sit on land that is well above the Moray Firth.

My recollection is most of the holes will be routed parallel to the water, with few of the holes playing sharply uphill or downhill. About 6 to 8 holes will be down along the Moray Firth. The rest will work their way up & down the bluff that overlooks the water.  

I would not hazard a guess on how the elevation there compares to Chambers Bay, but it is substantial.

Thanks for bringing the #2 video from Castle Stuart to our attention. It is a 4-minute discourse by Gil Hanse on the history and construction of bunkers that is very interesting.

I visited French Creek, near Philadelphia, during constuction a few years ago and recall thinking that Gil and Jim were doing some really neat stuff there with the bunkers.

The Castle Stuart video is well done, and really illustrates the thoughtful, meticulously detail-oriented architecture obviously going into Castle Stuart.

My hat's off.

Since Castle Stuart is not opening till May, 2009, I am guessing they may as many as 8 or 10 more videos by then.

If those are as good as the first two, the whole series should be quite a comprehensive study of how a new course gets designed and built.
