Vista Verde to close (not permanent)
« on: July 09, 2007, 08:15:24 PM »
As an FYI -- I've found out that the sensational Ken Kavanaugh course -- Vista Verde GC in Rio Verde, AZ will be closing later this year as a full range of infrastructure improvements are added to the facility.

Don't have a specific date but I've been assured it shall return to open status sometime in '08.

It is already closed.  I tried to get a tee time there about 3 weeks ago.  Ended up on We Ko Pa Saguaro, which was very  enjoyable despite waiting to hit just about every shot.

I was told that it would be closed "....while they are putting all the infrastructure in."  I took that to mean the infrastructure for all of the housing that will soon surround the course, ala Tonto Verde and Rio Verde.

It should be interesting to track the opinions of the course once the "Vistas" become tile roofs.

I played Vista about 6 weeks ago.  Definitely an interesting experience pulling into an entrance that looked like I was going into a nuclear testing facility.  I thought for a second that I was tricked into some elaborate hoax where my car (and clubs) would be taken and I would be left for dead in the middle of the desert.  The course is great, the views are great, the greens are some of the most extreme I've seen.  It's a shame the houses have to go up.

The building lots in the first section have been sold for about 2 years. Approval has been slow on the permits for the infrastructure.

As an FYI -- the total down time is anywhere from 8-12 months.

I too agree -- if the housing element predominates all aspects of the golf experience then plenty of what is there will simply fade into the background.

I've got my fingers crossed there will be a healthy balance between the needs of the homes and the qualities of the golf course.

Vista Verde is indeed a fine design by Ken Kavanaugh.
