We played through 2 groups on 12 and 13 so unfortunately only got some random shots of those two holes:

Here¡¦s the 12th green and green site:

A look back up the fairway reveals the major contour on 12:

My only shot of 13 green, looking back from 14 tee:

My favorite hole on the course, the reachable par 5 14th, what may not be readily apparent is the further left you hit it the shorter the second shot, however the blinder the second shot, a drive down the right side leaves a longer second requiring a heroic carry over the fescue but it is completely visible (be careful though because downwind you can hit it through the fairway down the right side into the long stuff).  Much like the 6th at Engineers the player choosing maximum length off the tee sacrifices vision and the player opting for vision sacrifices length.  This option is mostly in play fromt the Blue tee marker or in, from the Black or Back Black tees driving it over the ridge down the left side is not an option:

With Back Black tees at 650, Black tees are 615, blue tees at 505 and green tees at 469, 14 can play as a 3 shot hole, a reachable 5 par or a stern 4 par.

A drive down the right side of the fairway leaves this for a second shot (what you cannot see is that while the left side looks safe there is a swale from and left of the green that will make a 3rd shot pitch difficult for those who bailout left:

If you don¡¦t go for it in two you lay up to the left, however you better hit it far enough left or you face this third:

Here¡¦s the proper layup spot:

Here¡¦s the swale to the left that is not visible from the fairway so if the heroic player going for the green in two bails out left they have this to deal with:

That¡¦s my putt for Eagle, which I  left short ƒ¼

A look back from green to tee:

Jason,

Love the saddle look on 12 and that swale on 14.

When you played, did you notice that the topography was leading to heavy wear in certain places?

The images on 12 made me think about that. It looks like the front of 12 could be suffering already. I'm guessing that a number of collection points in the fairways are aready finding this challenge also.

Are there places where they should massage the course slightly by building up a collection area, or inserting a bunker in that spot?

A small pot on 12 (like the one seen on 13) in the wear spot would still allow the conservative approach from the left side of the green.

Jason,

I've got a good head-on shot of 13 for you.  My favorite par 3 of the one's we played, but we didn't play the Bye Hole.  Fourteen does have a wonderful, natural flow to it.  We played it from 615, though and no one had a go for the green over to long stuff.

13th

And one showing the entire length of 14 with players on the tee, in the fairway and exiting the green.

One aspect of 14 that I didn't test is whether this kickplate will direct approaches onto the green or just kick them to the bottom of the swale.  If you can bank it off the kick plate with a long iron or fairway metal second while going for the green it would present a nice option to the heroic carry to the center of the green.  It would also leave you in a precarious position if you pulled it left and missed the bank.

This is also a nice look at the switch back feature to the 14th.

This is also a nice look at the switch back feature to the 14th.

Is this one of the holes where they moved dirt?

12-14 looks like a great stretch of holes.

I loved 12 and feel it could make someones best hole anywhere list. The drive, second shot options and green complex are all just WOW. 14 was head and shoulders my favorite par 5. 13 is one of the so so holes to me.

Tiger,

Did you like any of the other par 3's more than 13?

Dan omg yes. That was my least favorite. I liked all including whatever the turn hole is better. I see the issue with the dell hole but like how you can scope the pin placement from 6 tee before playing it. My critisism of the 3's is even though they are all unique they tended to play close to the same distance.

Tiger,

I guess we'll have to disagree on this hole.  I found 13 to have numerous interesting pin locations.  Front left by the pot bunker, anywhere right along the drop-off, in front of or behind the swale putting the swale in play.  I agree on the overall sameness of the distances problem when it comes to the par 3's and think 6 may play much better as a long 200+ par 3, otherwise I found it uninspiring. With 6 played long and the shorter Bye hole in the rotation a good mix of distances would then be involved.  7 is a a quirky novelty and people will like it for that reason, but I wouldn't call it a great or challenging hole.  The Bye hole looks good assuming that small green will hold shots when it gets really firm and 16 is real nice.  I wouldn't say the par 3's are a strength of the course however; a really good world class par 3 added to the mix would elevate the overall design.

Dan

I have posted about the par 3's at EH before.  IMHO they are the weak(est) link of an otherwise memorable course.

I too only viewed the bye hole and it looks like the best of them to me too. 6 and 7 in particular are snoozers.  I wonder with all those kettle holes, ridges and undulations why they could not find a spot for a spectacular 3 par.  I know Tilly would have found a few!

Dan I am with you on the other holes and how the par 3's fit into the overall view of the course. I did not see the green complex as strong as you but that happens when one only has one pass. You have more opportunities to look at the hole.
