TPC Las Colinas Greens
« on: April 27, 2007, 06:11:43 AM »
What happened? There are areas of no grass at all and then there are very visable, square spots where parts of the greens have been sodded. I know that have recently got a new Director of Agronomy in John Cunningham. Mr. Cunningham come over from Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, FL. Anybody have any information? I believe that the greens at bent/poa.

Bumpy greens for the Byron Nelson

IRVING – Four Seasons will have a renovated TPC layout for next year's EDS Byron Nelson Championship. Pros who played it on Monday said that's a year too late.

The old greens are in such bad shape that they are patchy and bumpy, causing balls to bounce off line. The putting surfaces of Nos. 5, 9 and 16 created the most problems.

"You hit a putt and it goes anywhere," Flower Mound's Rod Pampling said. "It's going to come down to the lucky guy who wins. It's two years in a row that the greens have been really bad."

With the bent greens at the end of their life cycle, they suffered infestations of Bermuda grass. So most greens have two or three varieties of grass on them, and that patchwork creates bumps.

Four Seasons officials are confident that they can improve the roll of the greens by Thursday's first round.

"Those are not up to our standards. We're disappointed that they're not better than they are," said Paul Earnest, Four Seasons director of golf. "We've got a plan in place to get them better every single day. Our job at this point is to get them as smooth as possible for the players."

Jason Gore said players shouldn't get upset about the conditions. He said there's one way to cure poor greens.

"I think it's really going to change your strategy," Gore said. "You've got to get it close.

This truely is unacceptable.

The Four Seasons or whatever entity is responsible for the resort should be more than embarassed.

With all the grief other courses get from the PGA Tour, there should have been a contingency site.

I hope the committee people in San Fransisco is watching this weekend. 26 million indeed!

They keep saying the greens are at the end of their life cycle.

What does that mean?

I've never heard of this at any other course.

The greens were problematic last year, and I believe were scheduled to be replaced (Cottonwood Valley's greens were redone last year) as part of a renovation plan.  The property was sold, and supposedly this delayed doing anything with the greens.

New ownership has put in a broader renovation plan that will include changes to every green, bunker and fairway.  The pond on 18 will be expanded, and the stadium mounding around the course softened.  The work starts next week - too late for this year's awful green conditions.  D.A. Weibring's group is handling the work.

If the greens are bent/poa as earlier stated, Poa annua (annual bluegrass) is a cool season, winter annual, so it dies in warm weather.  Is it that warm down there already?

From today's Dallas News:

"Tournament officials previously announced that all four rounds of the tournament will be held at the Four Seasons Resort and Club at Las Colinas TPC beginning in 2008. The TPC will be closed in May for a $6.8 million overhaul."

Since when did #18 have a lake on it?

It seems like every time I watch this tournament, there's a new pond that pops up somewhere. I remember #17 not having one either at one point.

I don't really understand what they need to change about the course, other than grass the greens again

When I lived in Dallas in the mid-1990s, there was no pond on #18 18...there was one on #17...they were ripping the course up pretty good back then....they made some tweaks here and there......I always like the double green with #9

If the wind doesn't blow out there, it is a relative easy test for touring pros.

Allowing the greens to get to this point for their showcase event is a travesty....I would be PO'd just being a member of the sports/golf club at the Four Seasons!
