Hello all,

I've been slightly remiss in posting a menagerie of images from my last few trips to Bandon.  I've got some of the par 3 course in here, a few shots of the property for Old Macdonald, misc. stuff from BT, PD and BD.  I played the new first green at BD a month ago.  Enjoy!

1st hole on the par 3 course

2nd....

4th, I think.

more par 3...

lovely setting...

okay...the new green.  Changes the hole dramatically.....for the worse.  I heard they will keep both, however, and alternate.

Looking west at the new green.

Bandon Dunes....4th green

5th hole

looking back on #9

10th tee....lovely strategic dilemma

green tucked behind the mounding.

love the 12th....

16th tee......my favorite hole on the entire property.  Drove pin high left....and of course parred.

The chasm.  What an awesome hazard.

I never noticed this saving bunker on 17 until my last visit.  I think it is new?

pretty views.

look see at Bandon Dunes from Bandon Trails first tee.

same thing as above.

Justin hating it on #8

Yours truly, however, came this close to driving the green.  And of course lipped out a birdie putt!

The hateful 13th green.  Do not go in that bunker right.

Magnificant view looking north from the tee on #14.  This was in November.  Wind blew hard but it was clear and sunny.

The 17th

My buddy entertaining the starter at Pacific.  No caption necessary.

18th green all dewy..

2nd

2nd again.

looking out to the 5th tee from above 5th green.

zoomed in on the 10th

awesome hellacious bunker complex on 13

If you are ever looking over here for your ball it's surely trouble.

Back to the 13th from the 14th green

future home of old macdonald taken from 14th tee

looking a little more northeast

From the 17th tee.  You can see the long bluff which Tom has said will make a nice home for an alps hole.

What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

Great Pics!  That green on BD 17 has always been there, I believe.

I keep telling people they have to play the par 3 course if it is open. Too much fun.
Great pics.

I believe the bunker on 17 is original, at least if I remeber correctly from the book.

And is that blue sky?

That's a great collection of images, Michael!  Thanks.

The bunker on BD17 fwy is original.  It doesn't show itself, as it is below fwy level.  Good it is there, as balls hit downwind can reach the ravine when hit right.

The par three course, Shorty's, is open most afternoons now...the local junior players have priority from 4 PM each weekday through their season.  And maintenance needs on the north range can influence Shorty's being open, as some of the greens on the course double as target greens for the south range.  So it's management can be tricky, but it seems to be working for all it's uses....and all who use it seem to enjoy it.

Sunshine today, and beautiful spring weather in general....long afternoons and a great golf season arriving.

Michael,

I never tire of seeing pictures of Bandon.  As a good friend of mine says, "Yes, this is my happy place!"

When did the par-3 course open? I had no idea...looks like the best par-3 course I've ever seen. (I think I'm going to have to move to Oregon...)

Cheers,
Darren

I just checked and the USGA will be using the original green on #1 at Bandon Dunes for the US Mid-Amateur this fall.

For those who missed the previous discussion, Bandon Dunes will be the main course with Bandon Trails being the second course for stroke play.  Pacific Dunes will be the site of the Zirpoli Cup (the Committee tournament the day before the main tournament) which is much more important. ;)

Some really first-rate photos, Michael--well done.

It is a shame about Bandon Dunes #1; I really like that uphill approach.

Tom Jefferson or other knowledgeable source, how frequently and under what circumstances, if at all, will the resort put the old green back in play?

I'm sure it was talked about in a thread, but why was their an alternate green built on the 1st hole??  Thats one of the funner green complexes on the course IMO...

I believe they built it because it is nearer the 2nd tee.  Also, it gets people hitting it more left than right so that they aren't hitting into the parking lot from the first tee.

Michael, what web hosting service do you use for the large format pictures?  I used Mystic and mine were always much smaller.

Based on what I've gathered from the locals, one too many hackers have blasted nasty slices into the pro shop, the pub, cars, etc.  Many windows broken numerous times.

It's a band aid fix, in my opinion, playing to a different green.  Ugly slices will still batter the area with balls.

Do you need a tee time to get on Shorty's?  How do you arrange it?  What is the fee?  We're going to be pulling into Bandon on a Sunday afternoon in late June before our 3 day blitz.  I'd love to get out on Shorty's for a warm-up session.

I for one disposed of a new ball in the parking lot of BD #1.  With 30 MPH winds, no stretching and a terrible golf swing, what did they expect?

The new green will be easier, less stressful and much more boring.

These pictures reminded me that Bandon Dunes has the best collection of courses any place, anywhere.  Really looking forward to a return visit...sigh...in 2010?

Tim;
Just ask in any of the golf shops at Bandon Dunes and they'll know the status of Shorty's.  No times are needed, it is first come first served....and takes about 45 minutes to go around.
The fees are entirely in the form of an honor box, with proceeds split equally between local junior golf programs and the Evans Caddy Scholarship Fund.

Tom, Nyk, Michael

How long has that building been there north of PD 13? And I don't remember it being cleared and seeded.

Peter;

That photo was taken with a strong zoom lens, as that building is actually the house just to the north of the Sheep Ranch.  It has been there a couple of seasons, if I recall correctly.
