Vintage Sunningdale New Article & Pic
« on: September 12, 2002, 02:58:30 PM »
Sunningdale New has gone through several changes through the years, original Colt course, Simpson made some changes, then Morrison/(Colt) abandoned most of Simpson's changes and made several themselves!  All the changes were mostly through the 6-9 stretch.  I'll try to post the details later.

Anyway, here's Colt's original 7th-now defunct.  For those who know the course: after the 5th, instead of turning left to the current (great) 6th, the course continued straight ahead, into the open heath.

This looks like it was a truly great and adventurous hole!  Very Pine Valley-esque?

I will post the original article that contained this pic.  Just need to compress the file.

Here's the article.  You see none of these discussions about Par... are anything new  ;)

Anyone know who this Brer Rabbit geezer is?  I've read a few of his reviews and he's opinionated and with good taste.

Nice description of the 5th eh?  See Michael Miller's painting of this hole (in Art&Architecture) to put a beautiful image to the words.

An image of the 5th (thanks Geoff Shackelford) to go with "Brer Rabbit's" words:

I imagine Colt was not too pleased that Simpson remodeling his work at Sunningdale.

Not sure about 'Brer Rabbit' in 1934, I wonder if it might be another architect.

Yes I'm not sure why the course was changed; I'll have to check.  From Colt and Co, I'm sure you remember Colt's partner, J Morrison's rather critical remarks about Simpson in the letters section.  He says something about being pleases that Rye had been "de-Simpsonised"!  (I guess when they abandoned Simpson's 1st and 14th there)

So I'm sure Morrison was quite pleased to essentially eliminate Simpson's holes at Sunningdale New.  Although from memory, I think he did use Simpson's GREAT green at the 6th.
