Finished mine last night - damn good read, lots of fun.

FWIW, this is the type of story that would make a good golf movie, not the spiritual/mystical crap that pervades the golf genre. IMHO, of course.

 :)

George,
Agreed on the movie; do you think ANGC will allow the filming to be done on site?  If so, where can we sign up to be a gaffer, whatever gaffers are?

I doubt they'd allow it. Maybe we can build a replica course.

We can even maintain it properly, no second cut, fewer trees....

Nice.  I second the motion.  All those in favor...

That's what computers are for.

When I went to Augusta National, for two days of Masters practice rounds in 2004, I had a *very* strong (overwhelming, even) feeling that I was not in an actual, flesh-and-blood place, but on a movie set. Everything was too ... perfect, though that's not the right word. The right word might be ... arranged -- as though an art director had set up the whole place ... everything ... for purposes of being photographed.

In fact, ANGC put me in mind of "The Truman Show." I kept waiting for a spotlight to bang me on the head.

Well, as long as we're using computers, I volunteer to be the body double for the Crow's Nest scene. I've got the bum left knee and everything.

Dan,
It would be hard to convey to someone who had never been there how true this is.  I think it is especially stark given that Washington St. is urban sprawl at its worst, and then you enter this place that looks like it must be where God lives or something.

It is perfect right down to the green sandwich wrappers that barely show up if they are dropped on the grass, and that are picked up by a worker within seconds if they are dropped.

I think that's why the Els ruling on 11 (I thought it was on 18; corrected from my failing memory courtesy of Dan Kelly) a few years back was so weird to me.  Here he hits a ball into the woods and is given a drop because the rules guy decides that the branches his ball is under are "piled for removal"!  You look around the rest of the place, and you have to wonder when they might be removed if they are still there Masters week.

Oh, you never know what sorts of mysterious things might be going on in those woods....

Arranged, like a movie set; like in that Stepford Wives movie?  ::)

There is already a Wikipedia entry for "Amen Corner."

I finally finished the book last evening.  It was an entertaining read.  I would love to know what a certain person thought of his "similar" character's untimely demise...  :o :-\

And, for you GCA.com junkies; you can play along in a home version of the game by using a google map/satelite aerial to track all the locations mentioned in the book, on and off the golf course.  ;D

I suppose when it gets made into a movie, Shefchik will conduct the casting couch for Caroline's roll...  :o ;D 8)

I presume you mean "role," Dick -- but, then, you did say "casting couch"!

(You're a bad, bad boy, Dick  :o -- and Rick's not that type.)

I am curious, though: Whom do you see in the lead roles?

Oh yeah... I'm a walking validation of Freud's theories of the unconscious mind...

As far as casting the characters, I enjoy doing that with books I've read.  But, I would have to give it much more thought as to Rick's book.

I like DiCaprio as Sam, Winslet as Caroline.

Who knows; they could have chemistry?

If Kevin Costner wants to play Caroline, that'd be fine with me.

But, dear God in Heaven, keep him the hell away from Sam!

Sam: Actor-golfers...
O'Donnell

or
Wahlberg

Doesn't really look like she could carry a staff bag at Augusta for two days, but clearly has other redeeming qualities.

AG, I'm guessing you are wrong on that.  She looks like she is in shape to me!  And, if you read the article, she has the cred... ;D

Okay, I gotta get into this game. I like the Mark Wahlberg suggestion -- especially after seeing "The Departed." So, could this be our Sam Skarda?

For Caroline, I had something more like this in mind:

But, hell, if they'll make a movie out of "Amen Corner," I'll live with Tom Arnold and Kathy Bates.

Works for me. If there's a second printing, you ought to put some New Kids on the Block on Sam's iPod.

I just read Rick's book and while I cannot claim to be an impartial observer, I take it as a good sign that I started out intending to read a few pages before bed and wound up finishing the book at 3:30 in the morning.  Well done Rick!
