Where to play in Palm Beach Area?
« on: January 02, 2007, 03:26:37 PM »
I have resigned from my job and am starting my own law firm on February 1, 2007.  My last day here is January 19.  On the 21st I am taking the family to West Palm Beach for a little R&R.  On the 29th, I am playing the Isleworth Invitational.  I would love to get a round in while in Palm Beach for a little practice.

Where should I play?  I'm not bringing my sticks as I will have to carry two car seats, a pack-in-play, etc.

Any ideas would be great!

The Links at Madison Green in Royal Palm Beach is a very interesting daily fee course.

See the thread with pictures on the new Nicklaus North Palm Beach CC.

I'll be in the area from the 19th to the 27th. Perhaps we can get together.

Ryan, I've been looking forward to trying out a new course called Park Ridge. It's owned by Palm Beach County and is built on a former landfill which created 70- to 80-foot elevation changes. Considering you're in south Florida, that in itself makes it worth a look in my book. It opens sometime this month with green fees south of $49.

Palm Beach Par 3 Golf Course (the website is golfontheocean.com)

It's one of the best par 3 courses I've played. It sits between the ocean and the intercoastal south of downtown Palm Beach. They used to have a professional event there and many of the PGA and LPGA players in the area would tee it up. It's probably the cheapest golf you'll find with ocean views in Florida!!

Steve,

The architect is Roy Case, who has an office in the area I believe. He describes the course as wide open and linksy, with all kinds of bumpy and rolling elevation changes and a 6-6-6 par breakdown. I'll be curious to hear a report if you get over to it.

Also, make sure you stop into Park Avenue BBQ for ribs and the Brass Ring Pub for the best wings and the coldest beer on the planet.  Both on US1... ;D

Get on Seminole, for chrissakes!  If you can't manage that, surely you could play Pine Tree or Jupiter Hills.  All this muni talk is frankly beneath you!

Talk about deja vu.
Several years ago, when I was working as design associate for Roy Case down in the Palm Beach area, we probably had lunch at Havana once a week.  I'll second Mark's recommendation on the Cuban food there.  Make sure you order it extra hot!  :P
I'm looking forward to playing Park Ridge the next time I'm down there because I've heard so much about it from Roy.
His landfill courses have all been very well received and I'm sure Park Ridge will not disappoint.

I agree with Mike on the recommendation of the Brass Ring and Park Avenue although the Brass Ring can be a bit of a culture shock for a golf crowd.  The wings are worth it though.

As far as the golf goes, most of the good golf in PB county is private and have been talked about ad nauseum.  As far as public courses go, I would drive up to Port St. Lucie (about an hour from WPB) to play at PGA Village to see what improvements Fazio made over the summer.  Pace of play can be really slow there if you go out after 10 a.m.

I have heard nice things about Abacoa in Jupiter, one of Joe Lee's last designs that is near the Cardinal's spring training home and I-95.

The Delray Beach muni is a decent Ross effort that is change of pace for the area and I'm really interested to see the newly redesigned North Palm Beach CC, the first twelve holes have nice topography.

Personally, I would have like to have seen Indian Hills in Fort Pierce before it was redesigned last year.  It is on a nice, although smallish piece of property for Florida and I'm sure Strong designed some interesting greens there.

Ryan:
There is a pretty good daily fee course at Abacoa in Jupiter on Donald Ross Blvd.
I'll be in Jupiter during that time if anyone wants to have GCA get together.
Best
Dave
