Golf in West Texas in January
« on: January 16, 2007, 07:33:12 PM »
I'm leaving for Midland/Odessa for a wedding next week and would like to know if anyone knows of any good public course options in the vicinity. I'll be playing Odessa CC and Green Tree CC since my brother in law is a member at both, but I may try to play my last day before I leave at a public in the area. Anyone have any suggestions?

BTW, I leave to come back on Monday evening when both of my brother-in-laws clubs are closed so I have some time to kill before I catch my flight on Monday.

David,
If I were that close, I would try to get to Lubbock to see Tom Doak's Rawls course. Otherwise, the only thing I know about Texas is that it takes a long time to drive across it. :P

Mark, I have and I know all about it. This is just in case. ;)
I leave next Wednesday, so anything could happen. I'm not getting my hopes up. We'll see...

David, I have not played much out there, but look at Midland the sister city. It is the old money town of the two and my guess is there is a pretty good daily fee course there. Lubback is a ways up the trail from Midland/Odessa. Yes the weather is a bit on the harsh side this week. I am passing the the Saturday game at Champions in light of the ice. Next week is a new world though.

David:

My advice is to go to Luckenback, Texas, with Waylon and Willie and the boys.  That successful life you're living has us feudin' like the Hatfields and McCoys.  Between Hank Williams pain songs, Newberry's train songs and blue eyes cryin' in the rain - out in Luckenbach Texas, ain't nobody feelin' no pain

Absolutely positively do not miss the Rawls Course in Lubbock...a really unsung Doak gem...only unsung because its a bit off the beaten path.

Damn - yeah, I looked it up, and that's a long way too.  But Jeffy Jeff's train songs do need to be recognized as well, anyway.
