Pure Speculation ?
« on: December 16, 2006, 04:40:00 PM »
I was thinking about the creation and alteration of golf courses over the last 100 years.

Coincidently, I was reading Brad Klein's new book, "Building Sebonack"

And, the question occured to me.

What will the first substantive alterations to Sebonack, Sand Hills, Friar's Head, Hidden Creek, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes, Bandon Trails, the courses at Whistling Straits and other new modern designs be ?

At the present time the architects of record are alive and well, but, that doesn't mean that memberships or owners can't or won't bring in another architect to make alterations, or, that the club's will do it themselves.

I think it's unreasonable to think that these courses will remain as they were on opening day.

So, speculate, and indicate what changes will be made to these and other modern day designs.

For one, eventually different grasses will likely be used.

Sand Hills will be give a tree at each tee to wait under while the group ahead finds it's golf balls.  ;) And of course when it goes public it will need some nice cartpaths .........

Friars Head has been tweeked every year since it opened. There was bunker work on #2, tree removal between 16 and 17 and front right of 17 to open the hole up to the wind.  New tees were built on (I think) 3, 6, 11, 13, 15 and 18. There was new tree removal between 9 and 10 to open the dunes and I hear there will be a new tee on #1 near the clubhouse.  It's a work in progress and getting better and better.

Will the clubhouse be finished before the yardage guide?  ::)

I recall Mr. Keiser stating he has looked into establishing some kind of trust to ensure that the Bandon courses will remain in good hands long after he has passed.
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

Patrick:

When it comes to alterations on golf courses, even the ones you mentioned, I think the time has come to face the fact that over time evolution (from play and perhaps more so from natural forces) and most particularly from maintenance practices alone can contribute sometimes almost as much to alterations as actual purposeful architectural changes.

That, I think, is a fact, an historical and provable fact, but one that was never really much considered in the past. The time has come, and for a variety of reasons, however, where into the future we may be able to actually "hold a particular look" more than has ever been considered or done before.

I could be mistaken, but havsn't a hole or two at bandon (unsure of which hole orccourse) already been changed?

I could almost swear reading it on of the threads on here...

The first at Bandon has a new green.

Bandon Dunes has already had quite a bit of work done to it, the latest being the new 1st green which was built to stop people from trying to hit their tee shots to the right and nailing the pub or even the parking lot.  (That optional carry was part of the original design before the resort core was expanded.)

Sebonack of course has its new 16th green so the finish won't be so weak.  ::)

I personally think it will be quite a while before Sand Hills or Pacific Dunes sees any substantial changes, apart from maybe a tee here or there.  Of course, that might change if one of them hosts a big tournament and the host organization sticks its nose into things, as so often happens ... but for everyday play they are not going obsolete anytime soon.

OK, I knew about the first hole at Bandon Trails.  Ralph and Tom's posts suggested Kidd's first hole which I don't think has been changed.  J
