Puakea GC on Kauai (Pictures)
« on: August 27, 2006, 06:05:17 PM »
Thought folks would enjoy seeing some pictures of this lesser known Hawaiian course on the beautiful island of Kauai. It is located near the airport in Lihue only a couple of miles from Kauai Lagoons. Robin Nelson is the architect.

A 10 hole course for many years (the devastation of the 1992 Hurricane Iniki stalled the development midway) - it was extended into a full 18 holes a couple of years ago.

While there are some less than stunning views on the first few holes of K-Mart and CostCo (in the islands biggest shopping center right next door to the course), there is more than enough natural beauty on the other parts of the course and GCA to make the course worth playing on a trip to Kauai.

Curious if anyone has played Puakea while on Kauai? Thoughts?

Has anyone played Robin Nelson's Mangilao in Guam? Looks quite spectuacular from the website.

Evan,

I played Puakea a few years ago.  I thought is was great fun and a big surpise.  Coming off being beaten to death by the Prince course, it was a welcome respite.  The greens and bunkering were quite interesting compared to most courses I have played in Hawaii.  I also got the feeling the course does not get much play which is ashame.  It might qualify as a hidden gem, if there can be such a thing in the islands.

You may be surprised that the tee sheet was almost full the day I played it - but I got the impression that Puakea gets more local play and less tourist play than Princeville, Kauai Lagoons, Poipu Bay and Kiahuna. I agree with you the course was very much worth playing and shouldn't be overlooked when visting Kauai. I guess it would qualify as a "hidden gem" for visitors.

The one other course on the island that I really wanted to see but didnt have time for was Wailua Muni -although it looked pretty nice from the road when I drove past it.

Haven't had a chance to play it yet, but here's a low-quality
aerial pic of most of Puakea (and the adjacent shopping center):

Thats an interesting shot. Did you take it from a plane or a helicopter?

I believe the large red roof just above the middle of your picture is K-Mart . I also believe the mass of buildings "Southeast" of it are a housing tract.

It appears to be a much prettier course from the ground than from the air...

Evan,

Taken from a helicopter.  Moments before I had stunning
views of the Kauai Lagoons courses, including being directly
overhead of the famous 16th on Kiele and having great views
of the harbor.

The shopping center is more than just a Wal/K-mart, it's a
smallish outdoor mall with 1 or 2 'regular' mall anchor stores.

I was thinking the same thing as you, that the ground
pictures of the course are prettier than what they look like from the air.

Its funny - out of the 1 zillion tourists who take those helicopter tours of Na Pali etc., how many do you think take pictures of golf courses ?  ;)

Did you manage to get an aerial shot of Kauai Lagoons from the helicopter? If so, I would be most appreciative if you would post it.

Thanks

I've been out to Kauai a few times, as my father has gone there every year for business since the early 80's.

I haven't gotten to play Puakea or Kiahuna, but I've played Kiele and Mokihana, Poipu, Princeville, and Wailua.

Puakea and Kiahuna look more local-friendly, and to me they seem to be better golf courses (solid strategy without the semi-playable flash and ornamentation) than the others.

I'm a big fan of Poipu, but alot of it's fame is it's connection to the stars of today that play in the Grand Slam, but it is a solid design, with the crescendo of the last few holes being good enough to compete with Kapalua.

Kiele was fun, but the signature 16th was perhaps the worst hole on the course to me.  Beautiful yes, but there wasn't even a spot to lay up!  I don't remember Mokihana very well, but compared to the "press" (perhaps internally Marriott-generated) Kiele gets, I seem to remember it being better than I expected.

Princeville is a course you must see once if on Kauai, but after that, the jury's out.  It's Jungle golf to the max, and if you ever lack the confidence you can hit the grass (as opposed to the deep rainforest), then lay up.  Potentially not worth the big money either, as good shots are only sometimes rewarded.

Wailua was great fun, in a minimalist way.  The course conditions are nothing to get too excited about, and either are too many of the holes, but the par 3 on the ocean, and the several holes starting the back nine that test your wind play are some of the best on the island.  Who needs the bright green bermuda and the well-built red clay bunkers when you have wind, waves, and for once a low price tag....
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....
