Anyone been to Torreon in Arizona
« on: May 19, 2005, 01:33:47 PM »
I have a buddy who is thinking about buying some property at this golf club in the White Mountain area of Arizona.  They have a 27-hole Von Hagge golf course.  I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it.

Thanks,

Dave
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

Can't help David, but nice to see you posting here. How's your son's golf game coming along?

Ed,

Thanks for the thought.  Hopefully we can tee it up again sometime.

Not sure I am back.  I was just trying to help about a buddy with the greatest resource on golf I know.  Torreon is pretty remote but I figured if anyone might have some feedback, it is here.

The season is just starting up.  My little guy shot 46 with a local PGA pro and sometimes poster over the winter.  He is playing great.  I am debating entering him in a few 10 and under tournaments but leaning towards just letting him love the game.

Yancey,

Please do.  I know it is pretty remote.  I figured it was a long shot that anyone here had even heard of it.  I cannot wait to hear your opinion.  Thank you.

David,

Visually spectacular as a lot of Von Hagge's stuff is, but you get pretty tired of all the contrived chocalate drop mounding by the 6th hole. Don't know if he was trying to keep you out of the forest or block home sites, but just too much dirt moved for me. The clubhouse and club overall are great, and if your buddy wants the White Mtns Torreon is it.  If he can go over to Flagstaff, Forest Highlands offers two superb courses. Hope this helps

Sean,

Thank you.  He is out there next weekend.  He really wants the White Mountains.  I will share your feedback.  Quick question, is this the kind of course you would be happy playing 50 times between May and September if you were just someone who loved golf and scenery and were not an architecture aficionado?

Dave:

I really like the 2 courses that I have played that Von Hagge designed:

Admirals Cove
White Witch in Jamica (really tough site)
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

David,
We played the course with two couples from Arizona.Everyone thought the golf and the development were excellent.Prices for property and memberships are mid range.
The area has rolling hills, pine trees, streams and small lakes and is quite attractive. The homes are set back from the course and screened by about sixty feet of thinned pine trees.
No homes directly face the course, all are screened.I have never seen this before. It works quite well as the homes are brown or gray and blend in well. The course is routed through
the natural terrain with no evidence of massive earth moving. Natural hazards such as streams and ravines are utilized well..Bunkering is dramatic.
The town of Show Low is two miles away and has adequate services. It is three hours to Pheonix,Tuscon, or Albuquerque.

Just doing some searching to find out if the course was mentioned at all. I played 27 holes up at Torreon over a year and a half ago but at the time was not to into architecture. I will be stoping there on my trip back to Arizona State. I'll post some pictures and comments after i get settled back into the greatest city on earth, at least for a college kid.  ;D
