Question about greens mowing
« on: July 06, 2019, 08:11:43 PM »
Why aren’t greens mowed the way a Zamboni goes over the ice at a skating rink?

No turning around, no driving over the rough, etc. It seems simpler and easier but I’ve never seen it done.

Could get rid of all irrigation at the green by using the Zamboni water system

Fairways get mowed in this pattern quite often.  But for greens mowers it doesn’t make sense, because the area is small, and the mowers are much more maneuverable especially the walk mowers.  Zamboni can’t turn on a dime where mowers can.

Matt,

it is very important that the direction of cut is altered with each cut to keep a smooth playing surface. Also, turning on the putting surface would quickly lead to bald patches.

It really isn't the worst idea for a triplex, as they can be rough the on surrounds if the operator doesn't turn carefully.  Still, the direction would have to be varied as was mentioned.  However, since most greens are circular or ovular (as much as we like square greens and odd shapes round here) this is no big deal.

There is no real advantage for walking greens mowers, as they can be turned in no time at all, and having the operator walk the surround from the first pass to the middle of the green would just waste time and add steps.  Greens routes are already 4-5 plus miles of walking in my hood.

In one of the Courses By Country profiles on this site there's a set of greens mowed light/dark which I've never seen before.  Somewhere in Europe but can't remember which.
Don't play too much golf. Two rounds a day are plenty.

Have seen some Posts on twitter from Supts who triplex greens have been actually mowing the way over the last year.
