Corey Pavin Sets PGA's Scoring Record for 9 Holes When He Shoots 26 on Front at U.S. Bank Championship

Pavin birdied the first six holes, then needed two putts at the par-3 seventh after pushing his ball past the hole. He rebounded with birdies on Nos. 8 and 9, first by hitting a firm putt that dropped in the center of the cup, and then watching his putt on the ninth slow to a near stop before falling in.

Pavin hit just two of six fairways in regulation, but needed only 10 putts to get through the first nine holes.

That course is outdated and really doesn't belong in the rotation testing the best players in the game who didn't need the week off.

As an FYI, he's 1-under on the back through #16, so birdieing the last 2 holes will give him 59.

Only one birdie on the back so far, two to go. Should be ticked if he doesn't shoot 59.......

Another case of distance not being important, alla Tiger at Hoylake. Isn't Corey ranked in the 130's in driving distance.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

In his dreams he's in the 130s ;)

Pavin is currently ranked 194th out of 194 golfers that are listed on the PGA tour web site.  His average drive is 264.6 yds.  To be in the 130s he would have to add about 19 yds to his average drive.

By the way, Tiger is #10.  I don't know if they count the stats from Hoylake since it isn't really a PGA event, but I bet that would have hurt him a wee bit.

You'd have to think this record will stand for a while.

If somebody ever shoots a 25 on 9 holes...well, maybe they'll play better on the back and break 50.

Brings to my Herbert Warren Wind's outstanding essay Nine Holes In Twenty-Seven Strokes documenting Mike Souchak's 1955 round at Breckenridge Park in San Antonio.

Matt, Souchak's 257 in that year's Texas Open stood for 46 years!

I remember Nicklaus saying if he ever shot 50 for 18 holes, he would retire as he could never foresee doing any better (hit all greens in regulation - in 2 on the par 5's - and then one-putt them all).

Does it matter to anyone that par is only 34 on that front nine?
