Is Brora Bankrupt?
« on: July 22, 2006, 03:02:48 AM »
I heard a rumour yesterday that Brora has gone bankrupt...is this true?

Say it ain't so Joe, Say it ain't so..

How could it be.  Their maintenance is done by sheep and they seem to have a steady flow of yanks (sorry, fine american gentleman) to fill the coffers.

A search on Google news brings up nothing with regards to bankruptcy at Brora.

I am not sure how things work at Brora but don't forget that at many places in the UK the golf club is separate from the management of the links.  Therefore it is possible that Brora Golf Club has gone bankrupt but the links may be owned by the local town council and are not affected by that.

I would find that very, very hard to believe. I spent 24 days in the Dornoch area in May & June and, while I did not get to play Brora, I heard no talk about the club being in trouble.

In fact, there was an article in the Northern Times paper in early June about the relatively high-profile club pro that had recently come to work at Brora. I believe he was a past president of the Scottish PGA or something along those lines.

In addition, there was a very successful development of 24 holiday apartments built a year ago overlooking the course, on the site of the old Links Hotel. In fact, the demand for these apartments was so great, another development nearby is planned.

I received this reply today from Tony Gill, Brora's Club Secretary.

I can assure you there is absolutely no truth in the rumour. Brora is not experiencing any kind of financial difficulty at present. I would be very interested to know what website this appeared on.

Thank you for letting us know and asking the question of the only people who have the right answer.

Kind regards
Tony

Thanks for clearing that up, Gary.

Had a great day at Brora in May and was a bit surprised by this rumour.

David: The guy in the pro shop back in May told me that he used to work at Dalmahoy, and was involved with the Solheim Cup when it was staged there. Was it him, or have they hired another one?

Eric -

I am positive you met the new pro at Brora in May. I believe he was at Dalmahoy and was a major figure in the Scottish PGA. The article said he was semi-retired and living much of the year in France.  The club contacted him to help them search for a new pro to hire. He realized he missed Scotland, so he decided to move back and take the job himself.  I will try to get up there to meet him and play the course when I go over next month.

The fellow's name is Brian Anderson. The Northern Times ran a very nice article about him on June 2. He has worked at several well known clubs, including Dalmahoy. If you scroll down and do a search at www.northern-times.co.uk you should be able to find the article. Sorry, I am too lazy to post the full link to the article!

Gary -

I have been home from Dornoch since June 6 and will return August 18.  That's long enough!

Thanks for pointing me to the article.

Going back to Dornoch in August... you could do worse, I'll guess.  :)
