2002 Best Redesigns/Restorations?
« on: November 01, 2002, 11:23:22 AM »
I was wondering what people thought were some of the best redesigns, restorations, renovations, etc... were that opened this year? Private or public.

I'll nominate San Francisco Golf Club ... we got all of the greens rebuilt and reopened, and hardly anyone knew we were there.

One of these years maybe they'll let us restore it, too.

Question for Tom Doak regarding your work at SFGC!!!
I had thought that the project at SFGC was pretty much limited to replacing the turf due to the nematode infestation. How much work was actually done beyond that? Were the green contours and greenside bunkers altered on some or all of the holes? Please let us know. Thanks.

SPDB;

In the words of Sgt. Schultz from "Hogan's Heroes", "I see nothing...I hear NOTHING!....I know NOTHING!"  ::)

A splendid choice, my friend.  Probably the VERY BEST bunkering in the world right now, I'd even venture to say.  After all, if they were world renowned before, and they've been improved THAT much that they qualify for "Restoration of the Year", they must be God's very own bunkers at this point.   ;D

How did I miss that?  Damn...I'm slipping in my ole' age.   :-[

Mike C:  You misinterpreted my nomination ... I said right up front that hardly anyone would notice we were there, which is a perfect "restoration" to a course that was in pretty fine form beforehand.

David T:  In stripping away the top layer of sand and nematodes, we essentially lowered all of the green surfaces a bit closer to their original elevations.  This required working on the greenside bunkers as well to make them tie in appropriately.  You'd have to have a pretty good eye to pick out what's different.

We did restore (or fill in) a couple of bunkers that had been changed in previous years.  We softened the back-to-front slope on the steepest greens (2, 7, 8 and 11), by lowering the back or adding a bit of internal contour.  We enlarged the 17th green significantly back to its original size.  And we changed the green complex on 15, because it wasn't original and was a bit out of character, but they wouldn't let us go back to the original routing for 13-14-15.

So, we didn't do much, but doing it took Jim Urbina twice as long as Yeamans Hall.

Tom Doak;

My response was to Sean (SPDB) about a certain well-regarded northeast club, not about you and SFGC!!  :D

Since you mentioned it, I'm really glad to hear that the green work came out so well.  I'd love to see them give you the go-ahead to "really" restore it, as well!!   ;D

From what I could tell on the TV it looked like the work done at Fox Chapel was very good.
