The Wisdom of Staney Thompson
« on: November 03, 2002, 06:54:37 PM »
:) Here's a great quote on the North Oaks Golf Club that I think many on GCA will find appropriate and more than a little inspiring:

"Nature must always be the architect's model. The golf course should fit the terrain. The lines of the bunkers or greens must not be sharp or harsh, but easy and rolling. Every now and then I get a mean streak and like to fool the boys a little. But, I never hide any danger. It's all out there for the golfer to see and study."

::) The quote was on the score card, which I found to be an appropriate introduction to a great golf course. Anyone else out there had the pleasure of playing any other Thompson courses in the US?

CoMtn,

I could be wrong, but alas I don't think Stanley did any work out here. He preferred staying in the beautiful Canadian Rockies...

Thompson's work was limited mainly to Canada (not just the Rockies).

The exception being the few close to the border, but certainly never in the southwest..

You will have to come north to see the genius.

:D I checked out www.golfonline.com for the bio of Thompson, and found that he designed the majority of his US work in OH, especially the Cleveland area... Next time I'm there, though the truth is I have yet to beh ::)

I had the rare privilege to play the outstanding Westmount Golf Club in Kitchener, Ontario. I believe the course was designed in 1937 and I found it to be a marvel of strategic architecture (I love Thompson's cross bunkering). The course is consistently ranked in the Top 10 in Canada and I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience with Thompson's style.
