« on: May 22, 2006, 11:07:26 AM »
This  course has some interesting holes, driving  challenges, and some excellent greens. Is anyone familiar with it. ?  How does it compare with Deepdale or other work by Wilson

Mark:

I used to know it pretty well. I was actually there when the course was being built (when it moved from the old site in the 1950s)---the place belonged to my mother's best friend before the course, and my Dad belonged there for years. The unique feature of Meadowbrook is the size of some of the greens---some were designed mega-enormous. That era was the beginning of the "BIG" era for both Dick Wilson and RTJ, I believe. It's a fine course. Deepdale is primarily known for its smaller, contoury and super fast greens.

They have done some extensive tree clearing in the past few years.  There are some really good holes.  1 0 and 18 are really extreme doglegs, and are probably the weakness of the course.  1 is the only straight hole.  The course is built on a huge piece of property, but now has the unfortunate luck of the 4th green and 5th tee being right against a new housing development that once was a beautiful meadow.  Tripp Davis is currently doing some work for the club.  I have not played there this year, but usually play once or twice per season.

I worked at Meadow Brook for 2 summers as a summer intern for John Carlone, golf course superintendent.  Robert some of your facts are incorrect.  First off, You mean 5th green, 6 tee, when you were refering to the housing development.  # 5 is another extreme dogleg, so is 7, and so on.  The majority of the holes at MBH are doglegs.  But the second shots into the greens are a good test of golf.  Difficult par 3s there, 6, 9, 13, and 16.  6 and 9 are a good test of skills.  Tripp is currently working on the bunkers.  Hopefully they will fix the 18th green.

Mark,

The golf course has been modified since its original design.

Land was sold off, holes forfeited, holes abandoned (remnants exist) and new holes created.

As was pointed out, it's a big golf course.
Huge greens.

Craig Disher could probably locate early aerials and you could compare them to current aerials to see the changes.

It's enjoyable to play.

Wilson seemed adept at creating good golf courses.
