What you are looking at is Lang's Neck.. The blind second shot on the 3rd at Deal.  The flag is visible just to the right of me in the middle of the picture..  What the picture does not show is the broken ground after carrying the hill that leads up to the greatest bathtub green in all of golf...

Why in God's name is there a golf cart in your photo of the 3rd green at Deal?  Were you playing with Casey Martin?

Looking at that third green photo always gets me daydreaming about playing there...

Once or twice during a round of golf, if I'm lucky, I'll have some sort of tricky countour to chip or pitch over in order to get the ball to the hole. If I'm really, truly in luck the grass will be short and firm enough to allow running shots.

I'm guessing that at Deal you could end up with some sort of fun shot like that on almost every hole where you miss the green (and I miss a lot of greens). Basically you're either going to have a bunker shot or else something humpity bumpity to contend with, right? Or maybe a bunker shot and something humpity bumpity.

I guess the closest thing to that I've experienced was at Cuscowilla during the first Dixie Cup outing. Not trying to tweak anyone in particular but I've got to wonder if the people who bitched about the green complexes at Cuscowilla would also find Royal Cinque Ports to be unacceptable?

Take the picture with the cart in the background. What the heck would you do if a gust of wind blew your approach shot into the area behind that golf cart. So you'd have to play the ball along that ridge somehow and then once you're in the punchbowl you'd be shortsided for that hole location. Do most people who play there take that kind of thing in stride? I think it would be a great opportunity to pull off a miracle shot although I the odds of getting down in two are long and even down in three wouldn't be a gimme.

Tom--That is David Dobby the club historian.  David has injured his back very badly (he just turned 70) and was having problems walking.  Deal has one buggy for getting around etc or for elderly members.  So David took it out because we had golf's most beloved character--Mr. Morrisett--playing the course with Deal's club secretary at that time..

So no worries, Deal is not allowing carts anytime soon.  But you must get out there with me and RT and see if you'll agree with me, ran and russell that it is top 100 in the world (Ran thinks as do I top 50!)

Agreed that #3 is a world class bathtub  Superb contours and lots of routes to get towards the pin from the fairway.  The best?  Possibly.
