Outstanding Restoration - Wigwam Gold
« on: March 02, 2006, 07:31:13 PM »
Anybody who's looking for good restoration work should stop by the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield west of Phoenix and take a look at Forrest Richardson's work there on the Gold course.  I played Saturday and it is really good.  The course has been stretched a bit to over 7,200 yards.  We played at 6,800 and it's wasn't bad length at all.  The par 5's are all over 570 except for #14, the shortest at 522. #10 stretches out to 660 from the tips!

Forrest restored bunker size, depth and lips, returned greens and surrounds to original dimensions, took out as many trees as allowed, and generally has the place looking very good.  There was some nice new stone work as retaining walls keeping greensites from falling into ponds.

The new 18th hole has been moved to the left, right on a canal, with nothing to stop the overcooked draw or pulled (or in my case, heeled  :-\) approach from finding the water.  Forrest is disappointed he wasn't allowed to take the poorly placed and quite artificial mounds out of the center of the fairway.  (I blame those mounds on my mishit).  A very solid finisher.  My son David says don't even think about trying to cut the corner left of the big tree by the canal.

The course features a lot of quirky pins, well-contoured greens, and didn't remind me of any Robert Trent Jones Sr course I've ever seen.  Of course Forrest did cut many of the aircraft carrier tees into pods which looked more pleasing to the eye and made the course look much more classical.  Now if he'd made those pods square.......... ;)

The Wigwam Gold -- parkland setting, very little desert look except some gravely waste areas that work -- quirky but a ballbuster.  Fun to play and challenging, not to be missed in Phoenix.

Forrest has complete restoration of half of the adjacent and intertwined Blue course, hopefully more to come later this year.

Oh, and 1:30 p.m. tee time was $75, 50% off, and we finished comfortably before dark.  Forrest came out to see us finish and stayed for a drink.  He said he figured it was us because the two old guys were walking and packing and the two young guys were in a cart!  (It was the annual McBride Invitational -- my brother, nephew and son, three days of round robin fourballs for yearly bragging rights!).  ;D

In The summer I might be playing Oakmont, or working with Tom Doak. I’m willing to bet it won’t be the latter. But I spend my summers back in Pittsburgh, so I only get a few weeks of cheap tee times down here a year.

It seems like u have played a lot of AZ courses. My brother, dad, and uncle are coming down in a week. What courses do u recommend playing around the phoenix area? We are looking around the $40-$70 range. I think my brother and I are going to play one of the better courses around here. Its probably between We-Ko-Pa(AZ residents are like $110.) The Raven ($100 Twilight) or Talking Stick which I think is around the same price range. Which of those do u recommend?

We-ka-po is a good design but (except for Jay Flemma!) a tough hike and it's cart path only for $170.  I'd pass next time.

Talking Stick North is outstanding, see Ran's profile which highlights what an architect can do with a flat site without moving a gazillion CY of dirt.  Twilight rate?

TS South was good but not as consistently strong as TSN.

As I mentioned, Wigwam Gold at $75 twilight in high season is a hell of a bargain and an easy walk.

The discovery of our trip, affordability wise, is the Desert course at TPC of Scottsdale, across from the Stadium course where the Phoenix Open is played.  It's quite natural, 6400 par 70, has five par 4s over 400 yds and three over 430.  Very strong course and cheap because  the land for both courses is leased from the City of Scottsdale and it's about the only muni in Scottsdale.  We played twilight at 12:50 for $37 out of state.

Budgetarily speaking, make the 90 minute trip up to Globe and play several dirt cheap rounds at Apache Stronghold.  I think it's still rated #1 public in the state in spite of spotty conditions.  Great Doak design with many alternate fairways and driveable par 4s a couple of times.

Tom Renli can probably pitch in here too, he's a local.

I actually got to play The desert course and the stadium course for $90.(+ lunch+110 degrees). And Talking stick is a $125 Twilight.

Do u think i could get an AZ resident rate with an ASU ID?

I don't know what they were taking for proof of AZ residence.  Certainly nothing I had with me but a bunch of green fee receipts!

yea ill have to call them. hopefully i could get my brother the rate to. I will just tell them there is no way we are going to play the course for 100 dollars more than an AZ resident. Side not ASU Karsten, they have tournaments everyday. Never a spot for me to play. I dont like that at all.

Golfweek just did a nice article about the work at the Wigwam.  However, I can't believe they didn't mention the guy who did the work anywhere in it.  This guy Richardson seems like decent enough chap to get a few quotes from or at least mention his name  ;)

What would you say your best work is around the phoenix area?
In a few more days and ill finally get to golf and would like to check out at least one of your courses. Its too bad i have about 3 midterms to get through first.

"Best work" is up to the golfers to decide. We're proud of courses for different reasons. When it's fun to play that is probably "best".

Let me rephrase, what is you favorite work? Or is choosing just one like picking a favorite child?

And I apologize for getting a little OT on this thread.

Ryan,
I'd start by taking a trip south on I-10 to Eloy. Affordable golf and I think you'll find it to be quite fun.

I played Wigwam Gold in November with some locals and was impressed by the quality of the work. It's a traditional walkable course and the resort is a change of pace from the Scottsdale glitz.

Ryan,
Log onto www.golf602.com for good rates. In the price range you listed, try Longbow, Dove Valley(PM rate), Raven at Vistancia, Trilogy at Power Ranch. All playable fun courses that are priced right. If you can, play Gold Canyon Dinosar Mountain at twighlight rates, you will love it.
Thanks,
JD

Forest,
We played Wigwam Gold last month and loved the course. You need a different game to play among the tree than you do a traditional desert course. It is on our play list. Great Job.
Thanks,
JD
