Function, Simplicity and Beauty
« on: February 23, 2006, 06:50:01 PM »
I have always believed that these are the three mantras when designing anything.  When designing a golf course, what percentage of the pie does each mantra deserve?  Is it possible to be somewhat specific on the importance on each of these elements of design or does it depend on the site and client?

"Is it possible to be somewhat specific on the importance of each of these elements...."

I have always held good design (in any field, but specifically golf course design) to......hold in balance each of the three.
You use FUNCTION, SIMPLICITY, BEAUTY.  I have always used a slightly different, yet parallel thought....

.....Is the design maintainable, can the best of the game be played, and is it aesthetically pleasing?

Like a three legged stool........all legs must fully function or else one is liable to fall!  In my opinion that is never SITE or CLIENT dependent...it stands alone, as a truth of good golf course design.

Tom,

Is that what you guys in Oregon equate to function, simplicity and beauty?....a STOOL? You need to get out more often! ;D (And no, we don't need to see a stool sample to prove your point!)

I was thinking of the parallels to women, but you wouldn't understand!

Hope all is well out your way,

Joe

Joe..........I can equate to a woman cow, and the STOOL that is used to milk her.

All of us out here are in tune with that!!

Things are good here...........beautiful, sunny weather, alot of focused work by the staff here, and some serious winter golf.

Good to meet you at the show!
