Can't just be coincidence that green speeds really started getting out of hand about 25 years ago, the same time Viagra was approved by the FDA...

My club doesn't post stimp readings, at least not yet (that I know of).  We've had a policy against it.  But I hear rumors that the powers that be want faster greens, so I'll be staying tuned.

I haven’t heard a good reason for stimp to be higher than 9ish except under special circumstances. 9ish has been my number ever since I heard of stimp god knows how far back. That said, I know of good reasons for stimp to be lower than 9ish.

I understand lengthening the course because technology has neutered many courses. That being said, Scotty Cameron, Robert Bettinardi, or anyone else has yet to invent a putter that consistently knocks down 10' sliders on a green stimping at a 7. Why are we increasing the speed? Because the putting is too easy? C'mon, man. Not to mention the effect the green speed arms race has on agronomic inputs and pace of play.

This response to the Park Club comment from way earlier, so take it for what it's worth.

Park Club of Buffalo is infinitessimally better after Ian Andrew did his work. It was my first private club played (on the JV team at Amherst Central) and it was overtreed and over-roughed back then. No chance for recovery around the greens. Ian came in and created a terrific series of tie-ins from green to tee, while educating the membership about the myriad possible shots from short grass. From the thick stuff, it's hit and hope. There's no skill in that. From the short grass, it's all about skill.

So, to Rochester's finest, I respectfully disagree with the take on Ian Andrew and his work at Charles Alison's Park Club (aka Kirtland Junior.)
