Kevin,

Wow, that is a great link.  It provides crystal clear images of the golf course and surrounding areas from low altitude.  It's definitely the best of the Map search engines I've seen.

Everyone needs to check it out, thanks for posting it.

Hmmm... I wonder if the club knows that Todd and Barbara - and UC Davis golf - have that out on the web.  Seems odd they'd get the ok, when it's made pretty clear to one and all guests who play there that publication of pics is not allowed.

And yes Jimmy - great call - one and all should use Windows Live.  Google Earth is a fad that must go away.

Kevin - good call.

Still it seems to me uncool.  If I didn't have such new-found respect for Davis, knocking off Stanford in football and basketball as they have this past year, I'd have a mind to report them.

Of course I never would do that.  But I'd want to, let me tell ya.

Mike
Tillinghaust was asked to design the couse in 1917 by the Club's Greens committee and in 1923 was called back.  This is when he made several modifations which were several traps were dug up and plantings of  trees.

To make a correction on your comment above about Tillie designing the course for the club in 1917, he was actually brought in by the club in February of 1920 to give the club a proper course and fix the monotony of the finishing holes. The idea that the course was entirely a Tillie course is a misnomer perpetuated by the reference in the book "The Golf Course."

I have found a reference to Willie Lock designing the original and a weaker reference to Neville and Grant having something to do with it. Lock was a golf pro at SFGC for a period of time before he resigned in 1922 and was also very busy designing golf courses(Ex.Lake Merced) and Neville and Grant are better known for PBGL in 1919. Neville was a member of the club and I am not sure about Grant, so that might be their input on the design seeing that they were both top am's.

I still have a lot of info to look at and always hopefull to get  some info on the original routing and compare that with what we know to be Tillies course. There are a lot of questions to be answered about the course and it's early history, I just hope that I can find some more info on it.
