I have some friends that are going ot Bandon and play all the courses there but were looking for other courses in the area, preferably with ocean views.

Nick...

There are multiple bandon threads that discuss just this topic...  If they want ocean views there are only a few worth talking about... Way North (4 hours) Gearhart GL and Astoria CC...North (3 hours) Salishan resort, recently drained and remodeled...Little bit North (1.5 hours) Sand Pines (thumbs down) and Ocean Dunes (quirky and tight, but enjoyable)....

Nick, believe me, this is not meant to be a snotty non-answer, but if you've managed to get to Bandon Dunes, why the hell would you ever want to leave? Just play 'em over and over again.....

If your buddies really want to play someplace besides Bandon I would suggest Salishan.  Good course, friendly staff, and reasonably priced.  Last year dad and me went for 77$ and a cart (dad cant walk, so just hush about not walking).  I think it was 50$ for a round for adults.

I'm not sure why Michael gave Sand Pines the thumbs down, I played it several years ago and thought it was a fun course. It's got huge dunes on several holes and the changes in the terrain are wonderful, weaving from trees into the dunes. It was the spot to play on the Oregon coast before the Bandon resort opened. Salishan, as Jordan mentioned, is also a good choice but it's several hours up the coast.

Pat, I have enjoyed playing Sandpines a dozen times or so and I believe that the "thumbs down" is due to the manufactured dunes that Rees pushed around...many of the holes have fairly flat fairways that run between two rows of mounds...IMO it would have been a much better course (especially GCA-wise) if the property had been left in a more natural state with fairways going up, down and around the dunes instead of pushing them into convenient places....I also think that it would have been better leaving a number of the dunes in a natural state instead of being seeded with mowable grass...But it plays as a more typical resort course...In Florence I prefer to play Ocean Dunes because it is quirky and moves amongst dunes that were left with natural grasses and open waste areas.

Nick, there really is no quality golf near Bandon outside the resort.  Others have suggested Sandpines and Ocean Dunes in Florence, and these are decent choices.  Frankly, if your friends aren't adept at discerning good architecture from bad, they'll probably love Sandpines.  98% of Oregonians do.  Ocean Dunes is very close to Sandpines, and while it's not a modern, flashy course, it's quirky and fun.  Salmon Run down the coast in Brookings is a decent choice, and the drive down 101 has some spectacular scenery.  Other than those three courses, you're left with a few really low-budget tracks that cater to the locals.

Nick,

Play Sandpines and make up your own mind.

If you want ocean views, make sure to arrange to play The Sheep Ranch.
