Knee length socks revisited
« on: November 16, 2005, 10:18:04 PM »
A while back a discussion broke out about wearing knee length socks with shorts in the UK.  This is considered normal in the UK but I have never seen knee length socks with shorts in the US, until last weekend.  While in Charleston SC, at a great course profiled on this site, I was exposed to a variation of the knee sock with shorts.  They were not exactly socks, but were something very similar to knee length pany hose.  I was utterly speechless and was wondering if anyone had ever seen anything like it.  Thanks

REB,
Haven't seen those, thank heavens. Beyond tradition, long socks can mask a variety of circulatory issues.

RE Blanks - That sounds like progress. ;)

Actually, it would be wrong to characterise the practice as "normal" in the UK. It is a requirement at many of the most traditional/older clubs who have many (old) members who know the thin end of the wedge when they see it. :) But that is a very small portion of clubs overall.

Personally I find it pretty irritating, but you need to keep it in perspective. The number of days when you find yourself wishing you could wear shorts, never mind short socks, are pretty few and far between when you are playing golf in this part of the world.

Folks with severe circulatory problems in their legs wear such socks. Perhaps they should be barred from golf courses.

I knew there must be some explanation.  Thanks rg.  I would not be in favor of barring anyone from a golf course for any health problems.  I thought it might be a new trend in the north east in direct retaliation to the knee length sock.

I got the impression from the Golfweek article(s) about Australian golf that knee socks were mandatory at some of the "better" clubs there.

Alwoodley July 2005, our host the former captain and club historian:

Nick was pretty irritated that his wife was allowed to wear short socks and he wasn't!

This is the super 8th hole, par 5 where you have to decide whether you can carry the nasty rough and bunker in the cross hazard.  You can play out safely to the right but the third shot is much more difficult with the guarding greenside bunker on that side.

In Kenya, the Rhodesias and South Africa long socks were de rigueur. Walking in the rough with bare legs was not a good idea. There is one type of grass that deposits a spiral-like blade that pentrates the skin.... and it hurts.

A.G.,

I think Royal Melbourne still has the requirement but most courses have now got with the times and allow short socks (with restrictions on colours). However, if you're over 50 and live in Queensland it's a mandatory requirement to wear them everywhere  :)
