Well, no one ever told that I could play those courses for $245 (I suspect I can't.)

If Ash can, then more power to him (and I agree that it would be a no brainer!)  Those weren't the terms discussed here unless I missed something.

I would still suggest he make every effort to come back to the Pacific Coast and try out Bandon rather than just ring it up as a one time deal.

Getting to San Francisco from New Zealand is an expensive business.  The exchange rate does not help, at present $1NZ equals US 66 cents.  At times it has been much worse than that.  So I have to  treat it at a one off exercise unless my circumstances change.
However there is no questioning the greatness of Bandon and I would love to visit there at some stage.
