The LI Express-Hurricane of 1938-A Raynor account (OT)
« on: October 25, 2005, 07:41:07 AM »
All of this talk about hurricanes recently had me interested when I read in the Fisher's Island Club history about how the island was split into three during the storm.. The amazing thing (shown below) is the track went right thru LI at the Nassau/Suffolk border.  I wonder how courses like Timber Point, Shinnecock, Westhampton and NGLA weathered it.

I've never seen anything on it but 125mph winds and moving at 50mph must have been something.  I recently went to Old Saybrook, Connecticut and played the little 9 holer Fenwick and was told by Tony Pioppi that Katherine Hepburn who lived there aced one of the hole the previous day before the hurricane and then had her house destroyed during the storm!  But in doing some research on the Net, I came across a personal account by an Arthur Raynor from Westhampton--was he related to Seth or just coincidence??? Here is the link.. And some pics of Stonington Ct, right across from FI..

For all of us who preach "Tree removal", I can't imagine the 1938 hurriance was all that bad ;)
