The Dreaded Dubbs
« on: June 30, 2005, 05:36:29 PM »
Sorry Boys, This course doesn't stack-up. What a yawner!!

To top it all off, the maintenace meld is strickly commercial, with the clear intent of not embarrassing these guys.

Furthermore, it should be the poster boy for the dark ages in G.C. design, 1964.

I hear they are bringing in Rees Jones to try to put it in front of the USGA guys.
That was one hellacious beaver.

A few years ago I was scratching my head until I got to the ravines on the back nine.  There was a stretch of terrain for several holes that was quite good.
Over-rated as a whole.
Thinking of Bob, Rihc, Bill, George, Neil, Dr. Childs, & Tiger.

I think its a wonderful course that needs to lose THOUSANDS of trees. I found it hardly a yawner.

Geoffrey, I suppose I was refering more to watching the boys play there, than actually playing it.
Mike, You're refering to the strecth of holes 13-16. The greenfront wall on 13 is likely the best feature on the golf course, and, that's mostly due to it's uniqeness and centerline nature. The sixteenth is also a fine hole with the lay of the land dictating the shot requirements.

I give up, what course are we discussing here?

And how come you guys don't have "amusing" first names?

Ahhh.  Cog Hill #4.  "The Dubsdread."

I played it about 15 years ago and thought the most difficult aspect of the course was the segmented greens.  Many of those greens are clover leaf shaped, with bunkers cut up into the green surface that create the segments.  As a result, greens that appeared to have a lot of square footage in reality played much smaller, as you had to be in the same segment to have much of a birdie putt.

The back nine stretch of 13-16 was indeed the heart of the course, although #15 is a pretty soft par 5.  There isn't room to stretch it out so it's driver mid iron for those guys today.

#16 is a good hole indeed, particularly when you get pumped after birdying #15 and hit a hook into death off that elevated 16th tee!

#18 has got to be one of the most awkward tee shots in golf, I never did quite figure out what the right line should be.  Maybe next time.
