Leaderboard quality and course quality

That is one outstanding leaderboard at CCC. And Kite's leading is nothing short of miraculous.  Is there a natural conclusion to be reached about the quality of the golf course?

The natural conclusion for me is that a higher quality course attracts a higher quality field. If this weeks tournament was at Avenal the field would probably be weaker than at Congressional.

The other regular tour stops at major championship (Pebble Beach, Riviera, Torrey Pines) venues also draw great fields.

Being one week before the Open also means a good field.

I agree that quality courses attract better players because the winner should have had to exhibit superiority in all phases of the game, not just win a putting contest, or,just plain be lucky!!!!!! (Nice theory!)

This thread might start up another discussion about The British Open-can you say Ben---what's his name again?

Or Todd Hamiltonian-or something like that!!

It is always a matter of discussion here that the competition the week before the Open is usually held on an inland course when the Open will be held on a links course.  While it is possible that the field for the pre-Open field would be enhanced were it played on a links course, it must be noted that the likes of Tiger Woods (and Tom Watson, in the past) play privately on links courses (usually Irish) while Ernie Els and other big names play in the pre-Open tournament.  Ernie has won the Open and so has Tiger.
