New "The World Atlas of Golf"

Something I found while looking for something else.
From Jeff Mingay's Web site[/url]:

Writing News: Jeff Mingay is currently working with British publishing house, Hamlyn, on an updated edition of the The World Atlas of Golf, a voluminous book profiling the very best golf courses throughout the world originally complied in 1976 by legendary golf writers Pat Ward-Thomas, Herbert Warren-Wind, Charles Price, and five-time British Open champion, Peter Thomson.

Cool news, Jeff. How's it going? Will you be getting modern writers to match Ward-Thomas, Warren-Wind, Price and Thomson? Who you going to get to replace Alister Cooke for the Forward?

Dan

My understanding is that Mark Rowlinson is in charge of this project (as he has been for the last few revisions) and is using Jeff (and others on this site) as resources.

Please tell me if I am wrong, for if so, I've been sending comments, corrections and suggestions to the wrong person!

Jeff,

I'm sorry if my using my 666 post to mention this worthy endevour might bring it any sort of bad luck. I'm making this post quickly so it will then say 667.

Rihc, I just posted what is on his Web site. Hopefully one of them will see this post and correct exactly who is in charge. I looked through the archives to see if this had already been talked about and didn't see anything going back the number of days that is the default.

I'm co-ordinating it and looking after Europe.  I've been lucky enough to have received offers from several regulars on this site, including Jeff, to thoroughly overhaul what is there and also to provide materials for the new entries.  What is more they have done so for a very modest sum - it's bargain basement publishing, I tell you!

We've been able to root out some of the less worthy entries - not all - and to get a few classics in as well as the best of the new.  It'll be a long process getting rid of all the dross because the publisher only has the budget for a small quantity of new artwork each new edition.

When I floated this revision across GCA I received hundreds of e-mails with ideas, corrections, critical comment (constructive and destructive) and I've tried to get as much of that into the new edition as possible.  Nevertheless there are still going to be questions such as 'Why is X in when Y is so much better.'  'Twas ever thus.

Rich, you'll be glad to know that you will now be able to drive off from the 1st tee at Dornoch.

Mark,

I need to order a revision of the "Writing News" section of my web site. Apologies, 'cause it kinda does infer that I'm in-charge of the update. Damn! That wasn't the intent. Again, I'm ordering a revision, naming you as editor and me: just a minor contributor to the revised World Atlas.

That said, it was a thrill to participate with the update. I've contributed new main entries for Sand Hills and St. George's (Toronto), along withGazetteer entries for Friar's Head, Kingsley, and Highlands Links. I also revised the Banff entry for Mark, and made minor corrections to the current writings on the other Canadian courses.

When is the revised edition due for release, Mark? (I never asked!)

No, Jeff, I'm not the editor.  It's Trevor Davies, but he chose to operate through a single point of cointact - me.  I see why now!  I don't know when it's coming out. Judging by the timing - everything has to be completed by 15th March - I should say it's planned for late summer release in time for the Christmas market.  I'll see you get a copy, don't worry.
