Memorial Park - easy walk under $20 during the week.
I like it.

Blaketree National is best public - 1 hour north west.  Idyllic setting - originally routed by C&C - mucked up a bit as they didn't finish - due to the oil bust - but still worth the trip.

Everything else is 30 minutes and $50.
Blackhorse South in the north west
Wildcat - Highlands - central by the stadium
Magnolia Creek - south east near NASA
Cypress - Tradition - near Bush Intercontinental

Cheers

Eagle Point is east... mt belvieu... stay away if its wet

Also in southern Montgomery County, close to Blaketree Nat'l. you can make a fine day out of adding High Meadows Ranch (Ogrin) or Woodforest at Fish Creek (Elkington).

The old TPC is now part of The Woodlands CC.. called the East Course.. so ya got to know someone .. for there or the Player or the Palmer courses :o.. like me.. The Woodlands Resort Courses are ok but mere shadows of past challenge..

I don't like Wildcat for more than few holes.. also gca Roy Case IMHO ruined WCC/Resort Panther Trail (aka front 9 WCC, North & Pines) Course..

Doing well Mike-thanks!

Eagle Point is east-in Mt Belvieu. It has some interesting and rather large elevation changes. Some good holes and some others that aren't of any note. Interesting change of pace and cheap green fees. Great piece of property for the Houston area.

At the risk of self promotion, if you don't mind an hour drive down 288 to Lake Jackson, you might try my new Wilderness there.  I know the fees are in the $20-35 range and the course has some nice features, like a Biaritzz green, mini punch bowl, half Dell Hole, etc. (Thats the one where you put around a computer screen, no?)

I have only played Blaketree National and loved it. In fact the other gentlement were there that day. did any of the writers make note of Andy's new course. I can remember the name but i think he told me it had public access. I need it anyway because I need to pay the man a visit based on going to the Rose Bowl and beating Michigan if nothing else.

Jeff,
Actually Lake Jackson has been on my short list to play this month.  Athough I did have an invite to play once before....
They are having a twofer this month for $40 - weekday.  I keep trying to get out of the office.

I will say that Eagle Point and Lake Jackson are in Houston like Blaketree is in Houston.  I'd say they are all an hour out of town - depending on where you stay.  As Jason said .. Houston can be an hour from one side to the other.

Time for a mid-week.. mini-outing for the 30th Parallel Gang to Wilderness?   Didn't know Lake Jackson was that isolated!

my clubs are always in the trunk.. given working downtown, I'm ready to strike out in any direction at short notice..

Jason,

I don't know; but he appreciates all the comments so far, as do I.

OK, then a few notes...  Memorial Park is closed on Tuesdays, as opposed to the usual Monday closing.  Wildcat gets a lot of corporate events, though obviously this time of year shouldn't be too bad.  If your buddy is a mid to higher hcp golfer (and doesn't carry it terribly far), the Wildcat - Lakes course would probably not be a lot of fun.  Wildcat - Highlands is somewhat better in that regard, though I'd agree with others it's not a must-play.

There's a 3-course complex pretty close to IAH airport (Bush Intercontinental) called Cypresswood.  The Tradition is the nicest course there - usually in good shape and probably $40-ish weekday.  (Haven't played it lately, so I don't know the condition.)

One other option:  If your friend is going to be in the Galleria area, and Memorial Park is not an option, a course called Pine Crest is probably 15-20 minutes away.  It's not a great course, and it's not hugely challenging (tips are 6900 yds, slope ~125), but it's close enough, good enough, and cheap enough (and less crowded than Memorial Park).

I also like High Meadow Ranch, fwiw - you can play it down the middle, but the course gives you ample opportunity to work the ball if you've got that part of the game.  (Though as mentioned, it is quite a schlep from town.)

Jason,
Have you ever been to Blaketree?
It's a crime to go all the way to High Meadow Ranch and not go the extra 15 minutes to Blaketree...

I say go with Memorial...they'll even get a few "nice" people that come up to chat with them while on the putting green.  Don't look into their eyes... it works for me...they eventually go away.

If Jeff get's to self-promote then I wil also! ;D

Since I am the Head Golf Professional at High Meadow Ranch, I can tout that our greens are in the best shape they've been in at this time of the year for our short history.  I've only been here about a year but have been playing it since it opened.

Steve, thank you for mentioning us!  Give me a call, let's go play!

There are very many really good tracks in and around the Houston area.  I love Blaketree also along with Fish Creek, oops Woodforest Golf Club!.  We will all treat you right.  Right now service is not a big distinction between our three golf courses, only price and distance.

I have my connections at the Woodlands to get y'all on "The Old TPC" of anyone is interested also.

Casey,

Sorry, for use of the word crime.  I do like HMR, but really like Blaketree.  Talk of your course came up once before during a discussion of 6 hole loops.  They work quite well...

Are you related to Carlton?

Mike Malone,

Big or little schlemiel, no big deal..  When playing out.. I've found most golfers in Houston area are pretty friendly and relaxed.. as long as the pace of play keeps up..  I played with two old guys from Philly the last time I walked on at Memorial, they were in for a convention.. we had a good time "playing" because it didn't really get serious, they were just happy to be out in nice weather!

Since the area has plenty of good golf value, folks often go for the convenience of staying/playing local, but since Houston is such a large region with a wide range of public/private golf ~ 50 miles give or take in any direction , the ~8000 square miles of territory offers some nice variety of courses if you want to seek them out.  River Ridge on the west side and Eagle Point on the east and Blaketree Nat'l / High Meadow on the north and Timber and Magnolia Creekl on the south side are good examples..

I commute 37 miles to the Woodlands, and since i have 99 holes x 3 sets of tees that = a lot of golf to be had within 10 minutes of home.. but I do pop out to Blaketree and High Meadow more than most other places, because they're on my side of town.. have some of the best topography around.. ususally business golf at other locations mentioned..

Casey.. is Chuck still there with you?  How's the 18th green these days?  TPC, errrr East Course is in fine shape!

Anyone heard from Hod at West Fork in Conroe?  It has feel of Reynolds Plantation in LA..
