There is some awesome looking, lush, rolling property in and around Pascagoula(sp?), Alabama, about 30 miles west of Mobile on I-10.

Sam,

You spelled the town right, but it's just across the border in Mississippi.  :-)

If nothing else, that location would include free irrigation every summer afternoon at about 2:45.

There's a great piece of rolling land just outside of Philly called Featherfield Farm.  If it weren't inhabited by an eccentric old coot one could probably build something special tghere......

I certainly didn't discover the rolling dunes connecting Breezy Point to the Atlantic, but they do scream, "Dream Links" to me every time I'm there. The land is absolutely, 100%, ideal.

Across the highway from Fort Ord (Monterey), Seaside, Marina etc, there are some wild dunes along the beach, much of which used to be used as a gunnery range for the military.

Breathtaking, craggy bluffs, windswept hollows and majestic, broken sand dunes right against the water.

It is such an obvious spot - and right in the shadow of the Monterey Peninsula.

Traffic noise is not ideal, but neither are noisy trains in the U.K. - Prestwick is next to an airport!

Huckster will puke if he reads this, but Bayonet and Black horse ought to have been situated on the water and the firing range and military training equipment should have gone where the golf courses are routed.

General McClure must have had rocks in his head because most of the junk that clutters the ocean side of the road is easily removed.

No puking here - full 100% agreement.  Hey, I loved (note past tense ) Bayonet because it was funky and over-the-top difficult, to the extent that it was the ultimate test of skill, patience and attitude.  I've never said it was great.  And as I read through this thread, I swear I was thinking "I wonder if someone's gonna mention the sand dues on the west side of Hwy 1 in Seaside".... sure enough, I am not disappointed.

 ;D

Talk about unfeasible now, though... jeez think of the hoops to jump through to develop that land.   :'(

When I was a kid we often drove through the Finger Lakes region of central New York State, and there was a terrific area of glacial deposits called drumlins south of a town called Naples. Beautiful low rolling hills--the potential greensites were many and varied. My first thinking about golf course architecture started right there.

I've flown over Sand Hills many times on the Denver-Minneapolis route--I get a window seat just for the opportunity to catch a glimpse!
