Aerial of Royal Hawaiian Hotel Course in 1928
« on: January 23, 2005, 07:48:08 PM »
I have come across an aerial of Raynor's Waialae course in 1928. It is not the best picture but one can see the bunkering on the holes that play away from the ocean and the routing. There is bound to be a better pic of this. The source for the photo is the 11th Photo section Air Service USA. It should only be a matter of tracking down the location of their archives. This should interest some here and as I do not have the time to do this myself, I thought I would give someone a head start. I can email the pic to those that are interested.

Sean - thanks for the info.

That photo is probably the one that was published in on of the magazines (Golf Ill, I think) not long after the course first opened.

I think on the copy I have much of the course is pretty recognizable .......  I'll check.

If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

I couldn't find anything on the internet (Air Service USA aerials).  Would love to see it and compare it to the part aerial done for AOTD.

I will send you guys the pic.

George
You can see quite a bit of the course but the quality of the black and white seems faded. The photo was a courtesy of the Matson Line that was trying to drum up some business.

I did a search on the 11th photo section Air Service USA and came up with a couple of hits. There are other photo section units (20th) if I recall that might lead one in the right direction. I hope to find out if there were any working in the Bay area(as there should have been) and look into what they might have. Its just a matter of looking in the right places.

Could you send me the links via e-mail or just post them here?

Thanks,

Thanks to Sean Tully, here's the oblique aerial from 1928, a
little difficult to make out, but with Raynor bunkering, the
shadows make it a little easier to make out some features:

and here's the partial aerial from AOTD:
