St Andrews Beach - Hubba, Hubba
« on: July 12, 2004, 08:48:19 PM »
This is the new development down on the Mornington peninsula that will hopefully make up for the generally disappointing courses down there now.

I hopped the fence, deciding I would need a look see before investing, and man, one look from the top of the hill had thinking where my nearest bank branch was to the course.

There is a link, www.standrewsbeach.com which should take anyone interested to the ultimate site, which has a routing plan of the first two courses, plus some diagrams and photos of the holes under various stages of construction.

I mostly wandered around the Fingal course, which is supposed to be the 'lesser' of the two there.  'fairways' were mown out, with green and tee sites staked out.  it really looks fantastic - lots of rolling dunes, holes that meander all over the place - it looks like they are really going to be super fun courses.

Has anyone else been out there and had a decent look?

Have the courses thus far met Tom Doak's and/or Mike Clayton's expectations?

It's a lot of money to stump up front, but with no subs, and, more importantly, a club that wants to be a real golfer's club, this is surely something anyone with a little loose change ;) can't miss.

The first course - the Gunnamatta- is finished and is almost exactly as Tom routed it years ago when he had the commission first time around.(before he lost it then won it back in one of the quirks of the design business down here)
It is,in my opinion, the best course on the Peninsula by some margin and the Fingal course- which we largely routed - is played over some fantastic land.

I think both courses will strongly contrast both in terms of look and difficulty with the rest of the new courses down there and I suspect they will be enduringly popular and without hint of failing to do the land justice.

Mike Clayton,

The Fingal Course, what exists of it at the moment, looks absolutely super.  Hopefully it will be constructed ahead of schedule!

The green sites looked like you only had to mow them to have terrific greens - will you have to do much to them?

Mark,

I doubt there will be much construction required, except maybe on 2-3 of them.

Some of the greens on the Gunnamatta course took only an hour or two to shape.  All eighteen greens were done while I was on site for one of my two trips to the site during construction ... we averaged more than one per day.

Is there a timeframe for completion of the Fingal course?
I'd probably defer my next trip until it's open.

I think it's up in the air at the moment but don't delay the trip.
I played three rounds at Barnbougle Dunes last weekend.
Having played Sand Hills and Pacific Dunes it certainly is in that league.
You could spend a week there just going around and around and .....

I thought I had seen some real positive reviews of this course, but I can't seem to pull them up as I search around the site.  Are both courses open and where do they rank in Australia?

Mark,

Based on the couple days I spent at St Andrews Beach last month I hope it isn't too long before I can make the journey again.

My sense it that it will be a very enjoyable place to play golf with quite a few shots I'd enjoy playing over and over again.

Where did they get the name Fingal? Is it anything to do with north Dublin?

Fingal is a small suburb or township of the Mornington Peninsula.  The Gunnmatta layout draws its name from the local surf beach.

Thanks. There's a Fingal County Council in Dublin. I was wondering if that's where the name came from.

Jason Topp:  No one exactly answered your question.  The first 18 holes [Gunnamatta] are done and about ready to open for member play ... they've been played on a bit, but the fairways were still very rough in December.  The second 18 are just laying there waiting to be groomed.

Tim Weiman,

We'd all certainly welcome you back anytime.  I'll stock up on sunscreen, and, more importantly, INSECT REPELLANT, right now. And save that bit of two-by-four my mother left lying around for those humongous huntsman.  ;), although you will have to use it, as I don't get within 20 feet of spiders, unless by accident.

Hopefully I can trudge around a little of Ireland with you before then, though?

Jason,

I have no idea where you are from, but in Aus, there was a very brief preview article of the Gunnamatta course in Golf Australia this month, but it was a pretty insipid little piece of work.

I'm working on some black and white photographs of the course at the moment, along with the odd colour one, and will, hopefully, have them (the B&W, that is) finished in the next week or so. Colour won't be ready for several months at least.

Depending on whether the club want me to or not, I'll post them up here.  I think they are going to turn out really cool, as the nature of the course at the moment particularly suits the B&W medium, with the bunker shapes, and the areas that are being prepped with native grasses.  Not to mention some dramatic lighting and clouds.  The red filter sure got a good workout...

After a pretty horrid winter, and the sporadic threat of a miserable summer, the weather has, as is traditional for the start of the Australian Open tennis, turned hot, and has been for the last couple of weeks, although December also wasn't too bad.

As a result, the fairways, after a decent dose of chicken poo, have gone berserk, and are now in pretty good shape, with several of them excellent.  A few more weeks like this should see them all in pretty good nick, I would think. I last saw them a week and a half ago, but it could have changed even since then, such is the magical power of digested chicken feed combined with warm weather.

As to the rankings, that will be a very amusing episode, I imagine.  All the mags here have fudged over where Barnbougle may rank, and I think the Gunnamatta course, which is spectacular but also very subtle, will "confuse" a lot of them, especially as it will take a couple of years for all the native grasses that are being planted to grow in.

I'm biased, of course, but I think it's easily the third best course in Australia.  I noticed that someone posted Golf magazine's last rankings here a few posts back.  Birkdale and Carnoustie were in the 20s, if memory serves.  The Gunnamatta course is so much better than those it isn't funny.  (And I am a confirmed Carnoustie lover).

More importantly, as Tim Weiman intimated, it is terrific FUN.
