I am taking off for a short while, and upon my return I will post a write-up of the stunning Northeast Harbor Golf Club, designed by Donald Ross and Herbert Strong. For now, I give you the second and third holes at Grindstone Neck, the most scenic I have ever visited.

Was Northeast a collaboration of Ross and Strong, or did one work on it first and the other later?

Thanks for the photos. As a kid my father used to caddy here during the Summer. He loved this golf course.

There has been golf there since 1895. Donald Ross built 9 in 1916 and Herbert Strong had 9 in 1925.


Tom -

On the front of the scorecard it says "Members or players are requested not to buy golf balls from caddies as it will forfeit caddies [sic] standing."

I'm not sure what that is all about.

I'm not sure what that means. I do recall my father telling me he used to look for lost balls and sell them. I don't think it is or was all that unusual for that to happen...especially in my old man's era. And there's plenty of opportunities for lost balls at NE Harbour because of all the trees. Maybe it led to abuses or slow play. My father passed away over a year ago, otherwise I'd ask him if he forfeited his standing.

They certainly do things their own way up there. Make sure you read the scorecard VERY carefully before teeing off.

LOCAL RULES

1. Ball out of bounds, penalty one stroke.

2. All open ditches, wet or dry, shall be considered water hazards, except the cross ditch on No. 2 hole. A drive reaching this ditch may be lifted without penalty.

4. In case of lost ball, a ball shall be dropped in approximately the same area lost ball landed, penalty one stroke.

6. Free drop in rough from roots from roots and rocks within two club lengths.

Serious question, do these Local Rules have any effect on the USGA rating and slope, not that anyone in Maine cares about the USGA ?
