Varadero CC - Cuba
« on: January 17, 2005, 12:32:46 PM »
I'm leaving for Cuba next month on a two week holiday, and do not know if I should bring along the clubs. Cuba has but one golf course, Varadero CC designed by Les Furber of Alberta - and the pictures on the website are mediocre at best, it looks fairly average and not worth the effort of lugging the clubs down south for one round.

Has anybody played there?

Tyler,

I thought the only visitors allowed were former Poilitburo apparatchiks.

And Canadians, Bob  :)

Tyler,

Go scout out the former location of the NLE CC of Havana, which was designed by Donald Ross and reported to have been very good!

We'll expect a report upon your return!

Tyler - I played a few rounds there a couple of years back. You are right - not a particularly remarkable course, and not worth going out of your way for, though there is one pretty and demanding short-hole alongside the sea. Whether you play the course depends, I suppose, on where you are based and what else is drawing on your time. I was a guest of a Canadian company called Sherritt who take their good friends there every two years, plus some golf pros (mostly, but not all, from Canada) to spice up the mix. Varaderos, as I recall, is the resorty part of Cuba, frowned upon by people in search of a more authentic experience.

Bob,

The Helms-Burton law does not apply to your northern neighbours.

Philip,

Thanks for the response, and yes, Varadero is the most resorty spot on the island, however, it is fairly close to Havana - and we intend on spending a couple of days there to capture a bit of the authentic Cuban culture. The golf looked rather plain from the website, and unless somebody tells me otherwise, I'm not very likely to bring my clubs along (especially because there are NO other golf options).

Jeff,

While in my first year of architecture school, our very well-travelled, educated and heavily PhD'd professor was showing slides of her trip to Cuba. She was enamoured by the group of Fine Arts & Performance schools that were built shortly after the 1959 revolution and occupied land that used to be golf courses for the American elite. While she was right that the new architecture was fascinating, it was her flippant attitude that a golf course could not be of any architectural merit or historical importance that irritated me. Coincidentally, that day I had a copy of Donald Ross' "Golf has Never Failed Me", and double checked that Ross had built a few courses in Cuba. Perhaps it was the intimidation of such a well-educated professor, but to this day, I regret not taking her to task for such an irresponsible comment. I'll try to take some photos of the site, although knowing it has been built over...the natural landscape may be long since lost.

That's was a missed opportunity to take your professor to task, Tyler. Too bad.

Although, in the long run, it doesn't matter.

The Toronto Star published a great photo last year of Castro bent over a putt in full military gear.  Terrible set-up, closed blade, cigar hanging out of his mouth...classic.

I played then both in Nov. 1997. Published a very long story on it in Golfweek in Jan. 1998, with lots of photos, and if I can find I'll try to  email it to you.

Varadero (60 miles due east of Havana) on the northern coast is mediocre, not even with any good oceanfront holes, but who cares, it's in Cuba. Instead if shlepping clubs why not just contribute to the local economy and rent?

Same for the remaining 9-holes of Havana CC. As I recall, this is not the remnants of the Ross layout but a leftover from another 9-hole layout called Havana Golf Club that is 5 miles south of town, just below the airport. It's about 3,100 yards, real basic. The old Ross layout is gone, paved over for the revolution.

My advice is to go through the motions of golf there but spend your time gawking at the old cars, have a few drinks at "Floridita" (Hemingway's haunt), and spend time in old Havana. You'll have more than you can handle with the cigars, alcohol, architecture and (if you are so inclined) the women there - in which case, I'd bring along additional security measures. But the golf is not the reason to go, although it is fun to say you've played there.

I'd have to agree with Mr. Klein. If I we going to Cuba, I'd be spending my time on cigars and culture.

Hi Tyler,

If you want Cuban culture and decent golf, stay a couple of extra days in Miami.  However, do stop by the Cohiba shop just west of Old Havana across the street from the Capitolio building on Industria street. (99% sure)

Brad,

I'd like to read the article if you can find it, and thank you in advance for the trouble. Further, thanks for golf info and the tips for enjoying Havana more thouroughly. The "extra protection" will not be necessary because I'm travelling with my wife. As the rules state, "I can look at the menu, I just can't order". ;D
