Florida Golf

In July I'll be moving to Ft. Myers area to begin my teaching career. I have seen that their city course is a Donald Ross design and I will be looking for a place to work during the summer months.

What are some great designs/quality courses in this area?

I have searched the internet for days but have a difficult time finding quality internet sources that aren't touristy/awful.

Thanks!

In the public arena, the new Nicklaus course, Old Corkscrew in Estero, has been getting good reviews. www.oldcorkscrew.com

Also, in North Venice, Venetian Golf and River Club, is an up and coming course. Take a tour:http://tinyurl.com/2qtazn

Also, Heritage Bay by Hurdzan/Fry in North Naples is getting good reviews.

There are many fine golf courses in this area, despite what you will hear on this site. Our biggest problem is a lack of public courses, most courses are private. This time of year, things are winding down and access is easier, but it can be a bear in the winter when all of the Northerners are here. Florida golf is generally a different animal than what you may be used to, but we do manage to have a lot of fun, despite the lack of Mackenzie tracks and our Bermudagrass greens.
Once you get settled, try out Crown Colony, Cypress Lakes, The Vines, Fiddlesticks, Heritage palms, Old Hickory and on and on and on........
Welcome to Florida, please use your turn signal, slower vehicles....use the right lane.

Haha - man, I was down there (from Michigan) a few weeks ago and could not believe the number of private courses. After the shock of that I was greeted with $50 green fees that would be $18-25 courses up here.

Since I will be looking to a place to play/work, what are some of the public courses in the area? The Corkscrew looks fantastic - but as a Nicklaus course it may be a bit too "showy" for my tastes. Nicklaus courses have recieved a warmer welcome over the past few years though in the architecture world correct?

Is Fort Myers Country Club a good place to be?

Thanks fellas.

My favorite is Hole in the Wall in Naples. It's a private club so if you get a chance to play it do it. Played National it's ok but way overrated. There are some good ones there but I have't played in a while down there. Have fun.

Well, if you think 50 bucks is high, wait till you see Old Corkscrew. Ft. Myers CC is a pretty good deal, just don't expect private club conditions. Many of the clubs down here are "semi - private" which means public until they sell out and turn over. Here's a partial list consisting only of public 18 holers, there may be more, I don't know. Many of the privates are accessible during the off-season, but you have to ask.
