I agree with you re: the New, as I've said on another recent thread (the "Modern" course one).  It's definitely in the league of Nairn, Lundin Links, Elie and Western Gailes, although I prefer the latter slightly to the other 4.

The New probably does qualify as underrated - Brian Phillips and I were just out there on Saturday, as it happens, and both of us were very much impressed by it (him for the first time, me for the 20th or so time) - but I wouldn't even begin to compare it to Cruden Bay. As good as Nairn? Yes. As good as Cruden Bay? Not a chance...

And Rich, Carnoustie belongs in a thread about most OVERRATED, not most underrated. :)

Cheers,
Darren

Darren:

Cruden Bay that much better than Nairn?

You're putting Cruden Bay in Dornoch/Turnberry territory with that one.  Are you sure?

If so, that says a lot for CB.

I don't get this affection for TNC. Other than a desire to be idiosyncratic (which has its place, especially at GCA), why is it any more than an overflow course for TOC?

It starts with two dull, if not bad, holes. Some nice holes at the turn. But other than that I didn't find much to get excited about. Many of the par 4's are undistinguished and indistinguishable. (The best holes on TNC are the par 3's.)

Not within shouting distance of W. Gailes, Cruden, Royal Aberdeen, etc.

What am I missing? What specific holes do people find noteworthy?

Bob

Scotscraig Golf Club near Carnoustie is a hidden gem that hosts Open qualifying from time to time.  Although it is not a long course, it is very enjoyable to play and should be included on anyone's trip to the east coast of Scotland.  I would rate it above the New Course at St. Andrews.

The most overrated course in the world is, by far, the Old Course at St. Andrews.  That is the primary reason sheep are not commissioned to design the courses of today.
