Aside from the obvious, Tobacco Road and Southern Pines should be considered. Southern Pines might be one of the best deals in the country.

For good fun and good value go to Pine Needles and Mid Pines.

Stephen- This thread has come up many times...check the archives, but, Jeff and Jim are on the money, Southern  Pines(best value), Mid Pines, and Pine Needles would be my top 3 for value and interest...all 3 are Ross courses and are fun to  play. I still think you should DEFINITELY plan a first time visit around playing #2 at the resort. The variety of 4 pars there is unsurpassed.  The short 3rd hole and the long par 4 5th are as  challenging, different, and fun to play as you will find anywhere. -Mark

Perhaps budget should be considered...If I'm not mistaken, Pine Needles is a pretty penny...

FWIW, Pine Needles, Mid-Pines, Pinehurst 2 and 8, and Legacy are my favorites in the area among public courses - if you can swing it onto privates, CCNC and Forest Creek are nice.

Tobacco Road is highly regarded by most here, and without a doubt, it is interesting.  I'm playing there a week from Sunday...
