Watching the fast and firm conditions at The Grand last night reminded me of one of the best lines I've heard.  Bill Coore once said that an Australian greenkeeper (I forget who and from which course) summed up the difference in approaches to greenkeeping by many Americans and many Australians: "The Americans are concerned with getting the grass to grow, while we [the Australians] are concerned with keeping it from growing."

Interesting quote.

There is a big, big difference between growing grass and maintaining a golf course. A huge difference.

I can't recall exactly which one of "the old guys" said it, but I'm also of the opinion that the only thing that should interfer with the greenkeeper is the weather

A similar comment from Lorne Rubenstein's great new book, "A Season In Dornoch" where he quotes Bobby Mackay, the greenkeeper at Royal Dornoch, "We have a watering system, but we use irrigation not to grow grass, but to keep the grass alive."
