Fazio disparages Golden Age architects? ??

Tom MacWood:

We won't turn this thread into another point by point analysis of Sand Ridge, but you mentioned the "Redan" name for #11, so in fairness to Tom Fazio, let me point out that he was not responsible for naming any of the holes at the club.  Join me sometime and I'll introduce you to the person who did.

Jim Lewis:

I'm in agreement with much of your last thread.  I do believe Tom Fazio feels that with the money and technology available today, he can produce better products than what were produced during the Classic era.

Unlike Tommy Naccarato, I do own Fazio's book (actually two copies - the basic copy and the private Sand Ridge version) and feel I can say your interpretation is essentially correct.

Whether money and technology REALLY help modern architects produce great products is a whole different question, of course

Mike Cirba:

I share your belief that any person going into the field of golf architecture should begin by studying efforts by the classic era guys.  Like you, part of what I respect about Tom Doak is that he took being a "student" so seriously.

As Mike said, that was a very telling interview that Craig found and I don't think Fazio's words can be misinterpreted. Its funny/sad that he couldn't even use the term restoration in his interview.

Jim- was that your twin brother that I played with at French Lick?

I happen to agree with about everything you wrote. The entire golfing community will in the end judge the original courses he produces and we will indeed see if any of them stand up next to the classics of the golden age. As you said some of them are excellent, others not. I still have not played one that cracks my top 50 list.

Keep him the hell away from the competition (ie quasi-restoration)!

Bottom line is Fazio gives what is wanted to those that want it.  In spades.  Whether or not it is your cup of tea makes no difference to him and it shouldn't.

It is all about what your definitions are for "great" "better", etc.

I think I've said this before.

I agree that he should keep his version of restoration/modernization/reclamation/razing/out of those courses deemed "outdated".

Personally I really detest what he has done and is doing to one course I won't name (Not necessarily what you are thinking) that I really admire.    I won't go there on here.
