Pete Dye's use of tree (from Flynn thread)
« on: February 21, 2004, 02:31:12 PM »
Redanman, I did a new topic because I don't want to muck up the great Flynn discussion on the other one.  You can't really tell from the picture, but the trees on the left are out of play.  Without the key tree, folks could simply bang away at the front right of the green.  With the tree, there are decisions to be made.  Check out the tape of the 1998 Open there.  The women were putting it everywhere - some right, some left, some short of the tree.  This leads to other questions - who makes better use of trees than Pete Dye, and is that a demerit to his stature?

Jeff, I already mucked up the other thread. But to answer your question, No. It does not serve as a demerit. Jimmy or otherwise. Because Pete doesn't have a complete reliance on trees to create his wonderful holes he uses them sparingly and perhaps to the best use of any archie, living or dead. I do however feel that the interjected nine, on the river course, has more use of trees than most all other courses, I can recall, of Pete's. Especially the 13th hole, which has to be one of the most shot testing dictators ever, since they took the trees down in front of "Black Dog" Spyglass' 16th.

I going to start one other tree (in architecture) thread far more broad reaching than this one. It'll either create a firestorm or many won't want to talk about it or face it!  :)

Did anyone ever play Oak Tree?   Check out some of those trees that Pete used in his design!  The first hole sets the stage.

Here at Long Cove, Pete has used the old spanish oak trees to offer shot varirty on many holes.

#4-Par 4 of 375yds-Tree about 15 yards short of the green, block out the left side of the green from the left sife of the fairway

#8-Par 3 of 195yds-Tree about 20 years short of the green on the right side...more for a visual, but a huge, beautiful tree.

#11-Par 4 of 370yds-2 Spanish Oaks about 100 yards out making for a narrow coridor on this hole and a tee shot that you don't want to travel too far.

#15-Par 5 of 580yds-2 Spanish Oaks, one on the right, one on the left of the green in the approach....makes for a narrow approach and tricky layup.

Mark,

Played Oak Tree Men's Club many times, and the 1st hole is really defined by the trees, as well as no.3 (2nd, 3rd shots), and no. 15.  Not sure how no. 1 green came out after Pete came in about 2 years ago and redid the greens. Just heard its a tad shade deeper towards the front right.
