Thanks from Beverly CC to Tom MacWood
« on: December 23, 2003, 10:05:32 PM »
The members at Beverly wish to thank Tom MacWood for unearthing the following important piece of our history (from the American Golfer):

>June 1918

>The Board of Governors of the Beverly Country Club of Chicago last month let contracts for the construction of the new club house to replace the old house which was destroyed by fire early last year.  The new house and furnishings will cost approximately $100,000.  As was stated in a previous issue, President G.J.L. Janes secured an opinion from the National Council of Defense as to the propriety of proceeding with this class of work, and was assured by President Insull of the Illinois branch that it would be in keeping with the wishes of the government.  All of the necessary material is in Chicago and the building trades are not working to their fullest capacity.

>On the same night that plans were approved Donald Ross submitted his plan for remodeling the course.  He has made a number of changes and lengthened the course to approximately 6300 yards, adding about 500 to the former length.  There is no doubt his ideas will be followed and the star players who were able to hit under 70 will find it hard to get under 75.

Sincerely,
Paul Richards
