Choosing a Course Based on One Hole
« on: May 10, 2023, 06:38:55 PM »
Years back I punctuated my Erie Canal Tour with a visit to Fenway.  The reason? I just had to play the short 15th and it’s small unique green.   Made 4 btw.

When have you played a course just to see one hole?

6 at CC of Buffalo Volcano hole
11 at CC of Charleston Reverse Redan
4 at LuLu CC Quarry hole

My interest was piqued by these particular holes but all three courses would be compelling without them.

I hate to admit but I played the course at Coeur d'Alene Resort because of the floating green.

Never been, but the postage stamp is the main reason I want to visit Royal Troon.

That's a very good example.  It was the only thing I knew about the course.  The rest of it was quite a bit better than I would have expected.

The Cliff hole at Dornick Hills is another.

Honestly, so was North Berwick for me.  I knew going in there was more good stuff than just The Pit, but I had seen the diagram in Patric Dickinson's book when I was 13 years old and had been dying to see the real thing for several years before I got there.  Also the 8th at Cruden Bay, which was the only picture I'd seen of it before I went there.

I recently played Eagle Springs in WIS because of one hole. The same for Meadowbrook near Detroit.

How about the prospective members of Moortown being induced to join the club based solely on the Gibraltar hole?

The ultimate one hole course is Royal Tarlair with the 13th.

Great thread Mike,

I'm considering an add on course in a trip to a remote part of Utah this summer because of exactly that.  While most of the course looks ho-hum its got what looks to be a stunner par 3 that plays across a ravine to a benched green with an amazing view behind.

P.S.  Truth be told, I only accepted that invite to CPC a number of years back because of 16. ;D

Tens of thousands of folks per year come to TPC Sawgrass to play the 17th hole. Yes, the rest of the golf course is interesting, iconic, challenging - but the shot on 17 is the one that everyone remembers and that people travel far and wide to come see.

Mauna Kea 3d hole was main reason we tried the Big Island after many trips to Maui.

Sean - What was the one hole you went to see at Eagle Springs? Feel like there are a few strong ones there  :)

The opener.  I knew there was a volcano par 3, but I have seen others. There are a few more goodun's as well. Highly recommended course for anyone traveling to from Chicago/north WIS environs .

I think there are a fair amount of players that want to see Yale for the Biarritz hole and deservedly so. It’s tough to frame as the crescendo after experiencing the wildness of the 8th and 10th greens. Definitely a “WOW” moment but there are no shortage either before or after number nine.

Tim,

CC of Charleston is definitely worth a visit just to play #11. I wasn’t so impressed with the property itself, but agree there are some other nice holes/greens.

Tim-Raynor made the most of a pedestrian piece of land with some good holes. Besides the “Reverse Redan” I liked “Lion’s Mouth” and “Plantation” on the inward nine. The long views out over the bridge to Johns Island add some pizazz to the flattish piece of land.

Tim,

Lion’s Mouth is definitely cool. I agree Raynor probably did the best he could.

Overall, CC of Charleston is a very nice place, just better as a country club for family than as an outstanding golf course, IMO.

For me it was Machrihanish and the lure of the 1st hole. A good friend of mine, who was something of a golfing mentor to me, used to make regular trips to Machrihanish and spoke often about the first hole that I had to make the journey myself. It lived up to expectations although on my next visit some 20 years later big headed drivers had become the norm and somehow the initial tee shot lost a good bit of its interest.

I have played both several times but if I could only play one more hole, I would have to decide between the Road Hole and the 13th at ANGC.

I played with a well known member of this board yesterday at Elie.  He was contemplating a trip to Anstruther just for the 5th.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.
