The Greatest Game
« on: March 07, 2023, 12:12:38 AM »
What other game has the player call penalties on themself, tests them against both the opponent and the splaying surface, poses non linear obstacles and challenges, all while providing a great walk?  And when the day is done, concludes with a drink among friends who were their opponent just minutes before. And in what other game can you execute a play/shot  as well as any professional, however infrequently? What else do you like about golf, the game?

No judges and no entitlement. The ball doesn’t know who you are. Pure sport: there are 18 holes and you turn in a score.

It is the only sport where the playing field isn't pre-defined to any standards of size, shape, features, or terrain.   All that is required is a starting point and any number of holes in the ground as ultimate targets.

I like golf because it can be whatever you need it to be. It's extremely scalable, you can play in a highly-organized competition with 150 others or you can be the only person on the entire course as the sun is setting. You can take it as seriously as you want from high stakes to no stakes. And obviously many other variations as well.

Curling meets a lot of those “requirements”. Curlers call penalties on themselves, definitely test yourself against the opponents and the surface, drink during and after and wear clothes that can be just as ugly, among others.  Really just missing the great walk.

And they are both from Scotland.

You can play with equal enjoyment with and/or against others regardless of relative skill.
